Education news for Monday, Nov. 21

The Richmond Public Library is hosting three weeks of "Diversity, Discussion and Desserts" at its main branch, 101 E. Franklin St., during which VCU international students and professor Audrey Short will lead a discussion and share stories from their home countries.

Nine students from seven countries will give presentations on their cultures, traditions and holidays from around the world. By attending these events, patrons will help the students to improve their English-speaking skills and discuss cultural topics in an informal setting.

For the second consecutive year, the Hanover County school system has been selected to receive the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, the only national award program devoted to governmental budgeting.

Chris Sorensen, director of budget development and risk management, received a certificate of recognition for budget presentation (2011-2012) from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada, a nonprofit association serving more than 17,600 government finance professionals throughout the continent.

The award submission met the highest principles of governmental budgeting and received a proficient rating for serving as a model in the following four categories: a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device.

The school system's budget met 14 mandatory areas within the four categories and was chosen to receive the award based on its ability to serve as an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.

Sorensen was also recognized for his leadership in the development of the school budget during the Nov. 8 School Board meeting.
