Donations to Christmas with Cops being sought

Kentucky State Police Lt. John Dowdy checks the fit of a bicycle helmet on Jeffery Dixon during the Christmas with Cops event in 2010.

Plans are under way for the annual Christmas with Cops program that enables members of law enforcement to provide Christmas for under privileged children.

Organized by members of Limestone Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, the annual event raises money to provide children with winter clothes, school supplies and other necessary items, as well as toys to brighten their holidays.

This year's Christmas with Cops takes place on Tuesday, Dec. 13 and donations are being sought to make sure as many children as possible are treated to a special shopping spree, where they get to pick out what they want, with the assistance of an adult.

The night starts at the AMVETS Hall in Washington, where children are treated to dinner and a chance to win prizes.  Following dinner, the children and law enforcement chaperons travel by city buses to Walmart, escorted by police cruisers displaying emergency lights.

Maysville Police Department Detective Ken Fuller said each child is given $100 to $125 to spend, depending on the amount raised.  Over the years, those amounts have ranged between $3,000 to $5,000.

Fuller said the number of children selected to participate in the program is determined by the amount of money raised.

"If the public wants to come out and help, we'll be going to shop around 6:30 p.m.," said Fuller.

Donations can be sent to Limestone FOP Associate Lodge, Christmas with Cops, P.O. Box 271, Maysville, Ky. 41056.

Limestone FOP Lodge includes Maysville Police Department, Mason County Sheriff, Mason County Detention Center, Kentucky Probation and Parole, 19th Judicial Circuit Commonwealth's Attorney, Flemingsburg Police Department, Fleming County Sheriff; Brooksville Police Department, Bracken County Sheriff, Augusta Police Department, Kentucky State Troopers.
