HOLSTEIN , Iowa -- Dr. Gerald Goettsch, 65, of Bettendorf, Iowa, formerly of Holstein, passed away on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at Manor Care Utica Ridge, Davenport, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Lutheran Church in Bettendorf. Burial will follow in Oakdale Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Davenport. Gerald Herbert Goettsch was born Dec. 5, 1945 in Holstein, Iowa, the son of Herbert E. and Myrtle A. (Dau) Goettsch. Gerald was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
He was united in marriage to Roletta Jean Albers on June 4, 1966. Gerald attended Cushing Consolidated School in Cushing, Iowa, and graduated in 1963. He was involved in scouting and earned the highest recognition of Eagle Scout. Gerald then attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., earning a BA in Biology and Psychology in 1967. In 1971 he graduated from the College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Mo., with his Doctorate of Osteopathy degree.
He went on to do an internship from 1971-1972 at the former Davenport Osteopathic Hospital. Dr. Goettsch was in private practice as a family physician for many years. He participated as a preceptor in the Trinity Family Medicine Residency Program with one or more residents training under him.
Gerald's clinic employment was as follows, Family Physicians Clinic, Davenport from July 1972 to December 2001; Family Care Associates, Davenport from April 2002 to January 2005 and Milan Medical Group, Milan, Ill. from May 2006 to present. His other employment included the Iowa Masonic Nursing Home, Bettendorf from August 1974 to December 2002; EMSI, Inc., Davenport, from 2004-2006; Locum Tenens VA, Iowa City, Iowa, from February 2006 to May 2006; and CSL-Plasma, Davenport from May 2006 to present.
Gerald was certified in family practice by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice. His memberships included the Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association, First District of the Iowa Society of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, Scott County Osteopathic Society, American College of General Practice, American Osteopathic Association and the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice. Medical organization and positions held by Dr. Goettsch over the years are Past Secretary, Treasurer and Vice President of the Scott County Osteopathic Society, Past Secretary of the Davenport Osteopathic Hospital Staff, Past Chairman of the General Practice Department at the Davenport Medical Center, Board of Directors of the Mississippi Valley Physicians Association of the Quad Cities Health Plan 1982-1991, Peer Review Committee of the Mississippi Valley Physicians Association of the Quad City Health Plan 1986-1991, Chairman of the Mississippi Valley Physicians Association of the Quad City Health Plan 1986-1987, Peer Reviewer of Iowa Foundation of Medical Care 1983-1990, Chairman of the Utilization and Quality Assurance committee Davenport Medical Center/Trinity Medical Center, Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor Des Moines University-College of Osteopathic Medicine, Des Moines 1997-2005, Member of the Board of Directors of the Quad City Osteopathic Foundation 1991-1994, Vice Chief of Staff at Davenport Medical Center 1992-1993, Chief of Staff at Davenport Medical Center 1993-1995, Member Board of Directors at Davenport Medical Center 1984-1995, President of First District of Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association 1993-1995, Member Utilization and Quality Assurance Committee at Davenport Medical Center/Trinity Medical Center-North Campus 1979-present, Active Staff Member at Davenport Medical Center/Trinity Medical Center 1972-2005, Currently Honorary Staff member at Davenport Medical Center/Trinity Medical Center, Active Staff Member at Genesis Medical Center-East and West Campus 1986-2005, Currently Honorary Staff Member at Genesis Medical Center-East and West Campus.
As a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Bettendorf, Gerald served on the church council for three years. His interests in his life included swimming, karate, music, tennis, skiing, canoeing, camping, jogging, biking and playing craps.
He was a devoted fan of his children and grandchildren. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Roletta; his two children, Barry G. (Dr. Eva) Goettsch of Marengo, Iowa, and Nichelle L. (Elliott) Schiffman of Glenview, Ill.; his four grandchildren, Bennett and Abigail Goettsch and Zachary and Madelyn Schiffman; as well as his mother, Myrtle Goettsch of Holstein; surviving aunts and uncles, Vernon (Deloris) Dau of Cushing, Iowa, Leslie (LuEtta) Dau of Paullina, Iowa, and Mary (Robert) Hahn of Cherokee, Iowa. Also surviving are a brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law; three nephews and a niece.
Gerald was preceded in death by his father, Herbert E. Goettsch; a brother, Dr. James Goettsch; aunt, Elinor Goettsch; cousin, Lori Hahn Sokolowski; and uncle, Clarence Dau.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D.
