Stepping into the Past The next "Stepping into the Past" program is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Tobacco Farm Life Museum on U.S. 301 north of downtown Kenly. The program will feature bluegrass music. Surviving the Holidays "Surviving the Holidays," a seminar, is scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Shiloh Baptist Church, 3414 N. Shiloh Road in the Cleveland community. No matter how long it's been since a loved one died, grief can make the holidays a painful time. Howell Woodstock The fourth annual Howell Woodstock open house is scheduled from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center, 6601 Devil's Racetrack Road in the Bentonville community.The event will feature guided nature walks, daytime solar observing and nighttime lunar observing, mule team wagon rides, hayrides and making s'mores around a bonfire. This year's event also includes an earthenware fair with vendors offering handmade items for sale. Community memorial service The spiritual-care department of Johnston Health will hold its annual community memorial service at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, in the Johnston Medical Mall auditorium. If you've lost a loved one during the past year, you're invited to bring to the service a swatch of fabric in his or her memory. Gobble Waddle HealthQuest Wellness Center will hold its third annual Gobble Waddle run and walk at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, in Smithfield. The five-kilometer and 10-kilometer courses meander through South Smithfield neighborhoods. The event will begin and end at the corner of Second and Church streets. The entry fee is $30 or 40 cans or boxes of food. Pageants seek contestants The 2012 Miss Johnston County and Johnston County's Outstanding Teen pageants are seeking contestants. Miss Johnston County contestants must be 17 to 24 years old. Outstanding Teen contestants must be 13 to 17. Also, they must be a resident of or student in one of the following counties: Johnston, Wake, Harnett, Durham, Orange, Sampson, Wayne, Wilson or Nash. The pageants are scheduled for Dec. 17 in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium at Johnston Community College, 245 College Road, Smithfield.
