Actually… the Ravens offense struggles against ANY team with a decent defense. Hell, they struggle against teams with bad defenses.
The common denominator in all of it is they still haven’t found a quarterback who knows how to play the game. Sure, Flacco has a strong arm and his height… but he doesn’t have much else. And yes, he has more than enough talent around him to where it’s more than fair to put the blame on Flacco.
Many people in Baltimore want to blame the play calling? Well, the whole point of a play is to get someone open or in the best opportunity to make a play. From what I’ve seen, receivers have been open. It’s the overthrows, underthrows, not seeing the open receiver and throwing into triple coverage instead, and throwing the ball way too late… that stall drives and tire out the defense both physically and mentally.
The reason comeback routes on the sideline worked so well when Derrick Mason was on the team was because:
1. Derrick Mason is one of the best route runners in the game.
2. Flacco has a strong arm, as previously stated, so the he can get the ball there before the defender can change direction.
3. It’s a safe throw, where Flacco doesn’t have to read the defense nearly as much. All he has to focus on is one receiver.
The thing is… Mason is gone, and the Ravens can’t run that play anymore. Torrey Smith is always going forward, and Boldin is taking care of the middle of the field. If I’m the Ravens… I offer the Texans a 6th round pick for Mason and hope he can get can give Flacco that safety blanket. Obviously Lee Evans isn’t helping the team from the sidelines, and they refuse to play Tandon Doss because Harbaugh is just a blowhard with a fragile ego.
