HUNTINGTON -- A new bagel place is getting ready to open in the Frederick Building downtown.
New York Bagel Cafe and Deli will open at 944 4th Ave., which is the spot formerly occupied by Quiznos. It should open in two to four weeks, franchisor Joe Smith said.
The restaurant will open at 6 a.m. weekdays and offer more than bagels. It also sells breakfast sandwiches, wraps and omelets in the morning and throughout the day, as well as bagel sandwiches, wraps, paninis, salads and soups for lunch.
It likely will close at 4 p.m. on weekdays and company officials are still deciding about weekend hours.
Right now, New York Bagel Cafe and Deli is a smaller, East Coast franchise founded by Smith of New York. It has 13 stores open along the East Coast, but has 60 under development in the East and as far west as El Paso. The restaurant's success has been outside the city of New York because that market is saturated, Smith said.
He said Huntington is a great college town that will open the franchise's Ohio-Kentucky-Western Pennsylvania market. The owner of the store will be Mirela Gjunkshi of Florida, and the manager will be her sister, Entela Kalaj of Huntington.
What customers can expect is a great, authentic New York City bagel, Smith said. The dough is made in the Bronx and shipped to franchise stores throughout the country, where it's baked and everything is served fresh. Deli sandwiches are made with Boar's Head meats, and Green Mountain Coffee is served.
Smith added that he likes the space where his Huntington restaurant will be.
"It's a very unique, eclectic, great-looking retro feel," he said of the Frederick location.
The walls are lined with black-and-white photographs of New York, Marilyn Monroe and the Rat Pack. Frederick Building owner John Hankins said the dining side of that restaurant is the only place in the Frederick that has maintained the same configuration over the past 100 years, with its original high ceilings.
"I call this the steamboat room because you feel like you're in a steamboat," he said.
Construction is complete for the bagel shop, and the equipment should arrive next week, Hankins said, adding that the bagels sold there will be a cut above.
"New York City bagels taste better than any other bagels in America," he said.
