Man charged with felony retail theft

EDWARDSVILLE — A Godfrey man faces a felony charge of retail theft (second subsequent offense).

Aaron S. James, 30, of the 400 block of Straube Lane, was charged with the felony Feb. 28 in Madison County Circuit Court, where he also faces a charge of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Officials with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department said James was taken into custody about 2:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Godfrey Schnucks supermarket, 2712 Godfrey Road in Godfrey. Employees reported that James had left the store without paying for two packages of beef trimmed steaks. They confronted James on the parking lot.

Deputies took custody of James at the store. They said James had an Ecstasy pill, a controlled substance, on his person that he did not have a prescription to possess. James has a conviction for burglary, which made the theft charge a felony.

James was taken to the Madison County Jail in Edwardsville, where he was held pending formal charges.

Circuit Judge Charles Romani Jr. signed the warrant and criminal information.
