Viking Nightmare? Stephen Dunn/Getty Images
SATIRE Just when Minnesota Vikings fans thought that things couldn’t get any worse, fate delivers an NFC Championship game between the hated Green Bay Packers and the despised Chicago Bears.
Ugh! How can life be so cruel?
Didn’t the purple and gold faithful suffer enough already this season going 6-10 and finishing dead last in the division?
We had to try and keep young impressionable minds from hearing about certain texting activities of Mr. Favre.
When Vikings fans thought they were going to get an early holiday gift with Randy Moss returning to the team, the mood in the Twin Cities turned sour once again when Moss was unceremoniously cut by coach Brad Childress over complaints about food.
Wasn’t it bad enough that Minnesota then lost two home games when the Metrodome stadium roof collapsed?
Vikings fans then had to wince seeing Favre’s consecutive game streak come to an end when he was thrown to the ground like a rag doll by Chicago rookie defensive end Corey Wootton.
Finally, or so we thought, the final indignity of the season occurred when the perennial cellar dweller Detroit Lions climbed out of the basement and over the collective body of the Vikings with the Lions winning the final game of the season 20-13.
Yes, this past season was quite ugly if you were a Viking fan.
Of course, the season isn’t over, as a little more salt is poured into the wounds of Minnesota fans.
The Packers are going to Soldier Field next week to play the Bears for the right to go to the Super Bowl.
Vikings fans are now torn—which team do they root against to lose?
The pregame show leading up to the game will likely turn the stomach of most hardcore Vikings fans.
A retrospective on the history of the greatest rivalry in the NFL is assured, along with several stories about Papa Bear Halas, Vince Lombardi and Mike Ditka.
The 1985 Chicago Bear Super Bowl shuffle video with Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier dancing in the background will also be part of the pregame mix.
What will be more upsetting to Vikings fans will likely be the post-game wrap-up and the presentation of the “George Halas Trophy.”
If Da Bears win, how many times will Vikings fans hear the revisionist history about how they never doubted Coach Lovie Smith and quarterback Jay Cutler getting them back to the Super Bowl.
Would Chicago’s season have been as successful if Calvin Johnson’s touchdown had not been overruled in Week 1 because he failed to “maintain possession of the ball throughout the entire process of the catch?”
If the Packers win, how many times will Vikings fans hear the revisionist history about how they knew all along that Aaron Rodgers was going to lead Green Bay to the Super Bowl after his first game as a starter.
How would Green Bay’s fortunes have changed this year if Percy Harvin could have toe tapped the last throw by Favre at Lambeau field for a touchdown instead of an incomplete pass?
Yes, Minnesota fans have a difficult decision to make as the hardcore fanbases of both teams can be over the top and insufferable.
Of course, Minnesota fans in their hearts know that the same can be said of them as well.
In the end, for me, I appreciate the wait staff at Alary’s, a Chicago Bear hangout, slightly more than the 8th Street Grill, a Green Bay Packer hangout, so I will be rooting for the Bears to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.
