SC clears way for Narsingdi polls

The Supreme Court on Thursday cleared the way for holding election to Narsingdi municipality scheduled for January 17.

A three-member bench of Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque stayed a High Court (HC) order that on January 11 stayed for 15 days the process of election to this municipality.

The apex court stayed the HC order till disposal of its rule that had also issued a rule asking the election commission and government to explain why candidature of Lokman Hossain, a mayoral candidate in the polls, should not be declared illegal.

The Appellate Division passed the order following a petition filed by Lokman Hossain against the HC order.

In response to a writ petition filed by another mayoral candidate Abdul Matin Sarker, the HC on January 11 stayed the election process, and asked Lokman to appear before the court within seven days to examine whether he is a fugitive.

The writ petition stated that Lokman Hossain cannot contest the election, as he is a fugitive in a murder case.

Advocate Md Shohrowardi, a counsel for Lokman, told The Daily Star that there is no bar to hold election to Narsingdi Pourasava.
