The new year may have arrived, but college football fans haven’t effectively said goodbye to 2010, yet. There are still several more games to go before the season is over and New Year’s Day usually showcases blockbuster games.
This year is no different as the BCS Championship Bowl games kick off with the Rose Bowl, presented by Vizio and CEO William Wang, and the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl -- which Frito Lay CEO Al Carey is happy to host. CEOs of top companies have already positioned themselves for visibility in their products and heavy profits.
Once the Tournament of Roses Parade concludes, the sun sets on the Rose Bowl in beautiful Pasadena, California. There, the University of Wisconsin -- the fifth-ranked team in the country -- will take on third-ranked Texas Christian University (TCU) in a game that could very well be the best matchup of the “big five” bowl games (Rose, Fiesta, Orange, Sugar, BCS Championship).
TCU has been the story of college football this season as they were literally on the doorstep of playing for the national championship. Because the University of Oregon and Auburn University went undefeated, the story won’t end ideally, but TCU has earned tons of respect among college football pundits.
TCU head coach Gary Patterson has a tall task since Wisconsin was the winner of the Big Ten conference. The Badgers feature a hellacious rushing attack with James White and John Clay. White is the slash and dash of the two while Clay is more of a bruising, punishing tailback.
Wisconsin ran (no pun intended) to an 11-1 record and score over 40 points per game. The matchup is the classic unstoppable force vs. the immovable object scenario as Wisconsin’s offense has to tackle TCU’s defense which only allowed 11 points per game this season.
Later tonight in Glendale, Arizona, the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl features one school who has become a household name and another who some believe don’t have the right to be there.
It seems that every year, the University of Oklahoma is always in a big bowl game, and why not with a head coach like Bob Stoops who always seems to know how to construct great teams. This year is no different with quarterback Landry Jones (4,289 yards, 35 TDs, 11 INTs) and running back Demarco Murray (1,121 yards on 257 carries and 14 TDs). Stoops’ defense this year hasn’t been as dominant as those in the past, but scoring 37 points per game definitely helps.
Oklahoma is a powerhouse of a school, and they’re in another David vs. Goliath-type situation when they play the University of Connecticut. The last time this kind of game loomed over Oklahoma didn’t end well. Connecticut and Boise State (the school that upset Oklahoma in 2007) are similar in the sense that no one really knew who they were and similar opinions they don’t deserve to be there.
That’s why they actually play the games. UConn has a talented running back by the name of Jordan Todman. His 302 rushes for 1,574 yards and 14 TDs earned him the Big East Player of the Year award, and one thing that remains true is that if you have a running back that can keep a high powered offense off the field, there’s always a chance you can beat them.
That’s all the UConn Huskies are going to need -- a chance.
Tonight’s matchups in college football should be wildly entertaining, and they serve as the perfect way to get cured of that hangover from ringing in the new year.
