Randy Edsall can officially be referred to as the "former" head football coach of the UConn Huskies.
Luckily for him, he can also now be referred to as the "current" head football coach of the Maryland Terrapins.
According to theWashington Post, Edsall has been announced as the program's replacement for Ralph Friedgen, whose contract was bought out on December 20th. The university will formally introduce Edsall at a news conference at 2 p.m. on Monday.
Now that the choice has been made, it's time to question it. One of the other big names that was in the running for the job was Mike Leach, former head coach at Texas Tech. The Post reported earlier on Sunday that Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson and the rest of the brass "got cold feet" regarding Leach, and they wanted to make a "safe" hire instead.
As you may recall, Leach was fired in 2009 after he mistreated one of his players. Nevertheless, the consensus was that he was probably the best pick for the job.
Edsall led the Huskies to their first ever BCS Bowl in 2010, but they were humiliated by the Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Day.
He now goes from the subpar Big East to a very competitive ACC. We shall see if he has the goods to make Maryland a perennial contender.
