The 7th grade reading class of Tom Bean Middle School celebrated the culmination of four weeks of research over the novel, Farewell to Manzanar, by Jeanne Wakasuki Houston and James D. Houston, Thursday night with an open house parent presentation.
The students had read the novel and then were assigned research topics over the World War II time period. Their research spanned the attack on Pearl Harbor and the war in Europe to the internment of Japanese- Americans through out the West Coast to camps as far east as Arkansas.
They completed individual projects over the internment camps and the Japanese- American culture. These projects along with a variety of Japanese cuisine were all on display Thursday night for the parents viewing.
This project always teaches the students so much. They learn about World War II and the holocaust in social studies but many know little about the war with Japan and its effect on our country, stated Mrs. Cummings. This allows the students to demonstrate what we have learned in a variety of venues and subject areas. They not only show what they have learned with their writing skills, but this year they are using art, and music.
This parent night has become an annual event with the 7th grade. They use different novels each year, but they always do research and projects to explore what they learned.
We have such great parent support. When you schedule something like this during the busiest time of the year and you have over a hundred parents turn out for it, that just speaks volumes about our community, said Mrs. Cummings.
