Maybe he'll be an answer to a trivia question one day: who was the last player to commit to a major program in 2010?
The answer: Junior shooting guard Katin Reinhardt (Santa Ana, Calif./ Mater Dei).
Days after a stellar performance in leading his team to a third-place finish at the City of Palms and in the process, earning an invitation to the NBAPA Top 100, Reinhardt is off the board. He and his family had an opportunity to check out Southern Cal on Friday and a commitment ensued.
"We've been talking to them since summer," Ernie Reinhardt, Katin's father told ESPN. "We talked to UCLA last week and they weren't ready to do anything and the same with Cal. At USC, he's got a really good opportunity to step in. When you're looking at schools and who is coming and who is leaving, it's hard trying to make it all fit."
The 6-foot-4 shooting guard carved out a national reputation as a shooter. However, as a junior, he's shown an improved game getting to the basket and put himself in contention to be considered a top 100 prospect nationally.
USC had a chance to watch Mater Dei on ESPN last week and Reinhardt's game moved the Trojans to make him a priority. Reinhardt's father indicated USC ramped up its chase of his son since mid-December.
"A couple weeks before that they were hot on his grades to get his transcripts. They wanted us to come up and see a practice. I would say that after seeing him play the way he did on TV and against those teams it was a pretty good viewing.
They put (the offer) out there a little while ago and it's a good fit. Katin wanted to stay close to home and the opportunity to come in as a two guard, he liked it."
