Janitor Charged in Electronics Thefts at University of Alaska Fairbanks

Jeremy I. Moore, 23, of Fort Wainwright, has been charged with three counts of second-degree theft, a felony, and seven misdemeanor counts of third and fourth-degree theft.

FAIRBANKS - A former janitor is accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of electronics from the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Administrative Services Building.

Jeremy I. Moore, 23, of Fort Wainwright, has been charged with three counts of second-degree theft, a felony, and seven misdemeanor counts of third and fourth-degree theft.

The felony charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

UAF police first received a report Sept. 21 that items were being taken from the College Road building, though court documents allege some of the thefts go back to July 2010.

It was in mid-July that Moore was hired by ABM, the university's janitorial contractor, UAF spokeswoman Marmian Grimes said.

Despite Moore's Fort Wainwright address, he is not a soldier on post, U.S. Army Alaska spokesman Maj. Dave Mattox said. Mattox could not say if Moore is related to a soldier stationed on post.

The items initially reported stolen included a Macintosh desktop worth nearly $2,000 and a projector worth more than $1,100, as well as an iPhone, iPod Touch, laser pointer and an external hard drive.

An investigator from the UAF police department set up surveillance cameras and then left an iPhone out as bait. Moore was seen taking it, according to charging documents.

At the time he was caught on tape, he was holding a black object later confirmed to be a stolen hard drive, the documents state.

Police were granted search warrants for Moore's vehicle and Fort Wainwright home.

A stolen router was found in his vehicle and most of the other stolen property was found in his garage, court documents allege.

Moore also reportedly admitted to the thefts, though he told police he threw away the Macintosh desktop. He sold an iPod and iPhone to friends, though police were able to recover both items.

UAF police have since received reports of additional stolen laptops, projects, MP3 players and a GPS system, as well as smaller items, but they have been unable to recover any of that property.

Moore has no prior criminal record in Alaska.
