STARKVILLE — The Senior Bowl is going to have a heavy dose of Mississippi State flavor and another Bulldog is headed to the East-West Shrine game later this month.
Offensive tackle Derek Sherrod, linebackers Chris White and K.J. Wright, and defensive end Pernell McPhee accepted invitations Thursday night to play in the game set for a 3 p.m broadcast on the NFL Network at Mobile’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Jan. 29. The foursome will play on the South team.
“These four players were instrumental in helping the Bulldogs reach a nine win season for the first time since 1999,” Senior Bowl President and CEO Steve Hale said in a statement. “After closing out the year with an impressive Gator Bowl victory over Michigan, we’re excited that all four guys will don the Mississippi State helmet one last time here in Mobile.”
Center J.C. Brignone accepted an invite to play in the East-West Shrine game, which is scheduled for Jan. 22 at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando. MSU said in a news release Friday morning that “several other Bulldogs” are expected to accept invites to other all-star games.
Sherrod was an All-American on the Associated Press and Walter Camp’s second teams, and a first-team selection to both All-SEC teams. He ended his career with 33 consecutive starts, and helped pave the way for an offense that rushed for more than 200 yards eight time this season.
“I’ve always had aspirations of playing in the Senior Bowl because it always features most of the talented rookies for the next year in the NFL,” Sherrod said. “I’m just going down there looking to have fun and compete on one of the biggest levels out there for college football players.”
White, who led the team with 110 tackles, called the Senior Bowl invite a “dream. “I never really thought it would come true,” he said. Wright was second the team in tackles (98).
McPhee was a first team All-SEC selection by the SEC’s coaches and honorable mention pick by the AP.
