First Game Of 2011 Brings In Talented USC Squad

Huskies and Trojans will tipoff at 2 p.m. at Hec Edmundson Pavilion on Sunday

Huskies coach Tia Jackson is looking to snap a two-game losing streak

The Huskies and Trojans will help ring in the new year with a 2 p.m. tipoff at Hec Edmundson Pavilion on Sunday afternoon.

The Huskies (5-5) are coming off an upset-minded effort against No. 8 UCLA. Washington held an eight-point second-half lead before the Bruins rallied to win 60-48. Mackenzie Argens led the Huskies with a season-high 18 points to go along with 11 rebounds.

The Trojans jet into Seattle on the heels of a 72-57 win over the Cougars in Pullman, which extended their winning streak to a season-high five games.

Steve Sandmeyer will handle all play-by-play duties for the Washington Huskies - both home and away - on KKNW 1150AM. For home games, Sandmeyer is joined by color analyst (and former UW letterwinner) Elise Woodward.

Dan Giuliani and Sara Mosiman will pair up to provide play-by-play and color commentary for UWTV. The UW television station will broadcast eight home games this season.

Live stats for the game will be available on GameTracker. Fans can also participate in an interactive chat during the game as part of a GoHuskies.com feature

• Kristi Kingma has scored in double digits in nine of 10 games the Huskies have played this season. The junior from Mill Creek, Wash., still leads the Dawgs in scoring with 16.7 points per game, a mark that is fifth in the Pac-10 Conference.

• Washington has not lost three straight games this season.

• The Huskies have not been swept in the Pac-10 opening series since the 2007-08 season, when the Dawgs opened conference play at the Bay Area schools.

• Defense has been the hallmark of the 2010-11 Huskies. Washington is allowing just 54.5 points per game, second-best in the Pac-10.

• Mercedes Wetmore returned to the lineup against UCLA after missing the previous two games with an undisclosed medical condition.

• Argens recorded the first double-double for the Huskies this season. It was the second of her career, dating back to last season against Washington State.

• USC is located in Los Angeles, California. The Trojans are 9-3 to start this season under coach Michael Cooper, who is in his second year with the downtown LA school. The Trojans return a stacked squad that includes four all-Pac-10 honorees on the roster. Ashley Corral and Briana Gilbreath headline the unit, leading the Trojans in scoring at 14.0 and 14.6 points, respectively. Gilbreath is the reigning Pac-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Year.

• The Trojans are coming off a resounding 72-57 win over Washington State in their Pac-10 opener. Gilbreath and Jacki Gemelos scored 15 apiece to lead USC.

•USC is seeing the benefits of a healthy roster, notably having Gemelos on the team for a full season. The former High School Player of the Year is averaging 12.9 ppg as a redshirt junior after missing the previous 3 1/2 seasons with ACL injuries.

•In the Trojans five-game winning streak, the team is averaging 76 points per game, with a margin of victory just over 10 points. The guard combination of Gemelos and Corral are averaging 31.4 ppg together during the streak.

Series Record: The Huskies still hold the overall matchup with USC (28-25), but the Trojans have reeled off five straight wins in series. Washington played two tight games with USC last year, losing both by a total of nine points.

Noteworthy: Ashley Corral is the lone Washingtonian on the USC roster, and the friend of Huskies' star Kristi Kingma loves playing at Hec Ed. Corral scored 19 points in Seattle last season, punctuating her return with five 3-pointers ... Stefanie Gilbreath is playing for the first time in her Trojans career after knee injuries ravaged her first three seasons in LA. Gilbreath is playing for the first time with her sister, Briana, since the two played for Cinco Rancho HS in Katy, Texas in 2006-07.

After the LA schools depart Seattle, the Huskies will take to the road. This time, the team heads south to the Oregon schools, beginning with the Beavers on Jan. 6.

Coming off a forgettable game against Georgia Tech, the Huskies responded with one of their better efforts against No. 8 UCLA.

Upset-minded Washington held an eight-point lead well into the second-half, only to see the Bruins rally for a 60-48 win at Hec Edmundson Pavilion on Dec. 31.

Mackenzie Argens led the Huskies with 18 points. She augmented her performance with 11 rebounds, notching the first double-double of the season for the Huskies. Leading scorer Kristi Kingma added 12 points, and extended her streak of making a 3-pointer this season to 12 games, dating back to last season.

UCLA outscored Washington 27-5 off the bench, led by Rebekah Gardner's team-leading 15 points. The Huskies did a solid job, however, on the tandem of Darxia Morris and Jasmine Dixon, holding the leading duo to just 13 points.

The Huskies were hurt by the Bruins' vaunted full-court press, which caused a season-high 25 UW turnovers.
