Cricket Update: Ex-Pakistani Captain Miandad Expresses Reservations against the Indian Premier League (IPL)
Former Pakistan captain and legendary Test batsman Javed Miandad has expressed his reservations against Indian Premier League. In his opinion, IPL is a real distraction for international cricketers and the standard of the game is suffering with the arrival of such a lucrative league. Miandad blamed IPL to be the root cause behind the decline of Australian cricket.
Talking about the downfall of Australian cricket, Javed Miandad said that, "I believe Australia's slump has a lot to do with their players association with the IPL. Most of their top players got a bit too distracted because of the big cash thrown at them by the IPL. They even started ignoring ‘national duty’ which has really caused their downfall."
Australian’s have ruled the international cricket scene since the last couple of decades and was thought to be an invincible opponent at one point in time. However, since the retirement of Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist and Glenn McGrath, Australia has had a torrid time in all the formats of the game and has struggled to bowl out good batting line-ups twice in a Test match. The Aussies were recently beaten by England by a margin of 3-1 and failed to regain the Ashes as a result. It was not just a defeat; the Aussies were outplayed by England in every department of the game.
Captain Ricky Ponting has been under a lot of criticism but still he has been retained as the skipper. Somehow, the Australian batting does not look to be the weak link; it is their bowling which has been the real concern. Since Shane Warne has retired, Australia has failed to find a spin bowler who can bamboozle the opposition batsmen in the later stages of a Test match.
In Javed Miandad’s opinion, Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath could have played for some more years if IPL was not around and that would have done a world of good to the Australian cricket. Javed Miandad also expressed his fear that T20 league might just destroy Test match and ODI format of the sport. He said, "It certainly will. There is too much disparity when it comes to pays and if proper steps are not taken then top players will continue to put this league above international cricket."
