I'm really gonna gonna gonna let this -- to rip. Five most. Interesting. Sports events of this past calendar year. In descending order Bob Bryan your number five.
And one of preface this by satan that. This we know we can we can debate. All of this but this one aspect of the sports. Season. To -- year 2010 that there is no debate. That is what is the sound. The most memorable sound of 2010 and now. What three weeks okay we woke up there is this is interest turned on the television. And the first sound you heard. During World Cup season. -- Now -- Without the the most memorable yet I did say pleasant. But memorable sound of 2010. Of group venezuelans by overzealous. In South Africa -- model number five. Until World Cup by rising -- this World Cup is my number five that I I enjoy -- cup I enjoyed the totality of of following. The World -- I enjoyed it and I and I thought and I spoke with other. Soccer neutral people who also admitted they were swept up in the pageantry and the drama and then highlight the united states of course maybe Donovan school. That gets us into the second. But the World Cup. I today and that Monday morning after the finals. I kind of miss waking up and hearing.
Offered it would have been it for the for the World Cup it would have been in my introduction to. The greatest. Play by play announcer in the history of two sports. In dark when he -- Of the World Cup soccer among -- five Bob -- And was. The Bruins blowing a three nothing lead against the on going on negative. -- right index in this context record at the third time and you're Christian. It was member. For several reasons number one not just the historical fact it was the third time in history to eighteen in the playoffs. With -- the first time someone in so doing blew a three nothing lead against cabinet and actual game itself apple. Right or so but even beyond. As a lifelong -- guy. Who was actually fortunate enough not just to follow the Bruins preteens and he'd. And fortunate enough to do. Five years of radio play butler of directors actually. That it was the worst play by play notes -- greens and I said you know he was that'll put some notes. Not a crazy statement because compared to Bob -- and economic life or how many guys -- this year. Bob -- there for like 45 it did a great job. -- Particularly in contrast to the success of the patriots. In the Red Sox in the Celtics and you are a long suffering. -- To blow that lead. Is mind. So therefore. Israeli local entry into the top five list are entering into. The number five slot is the most interest in sports events at 2009. Boston Bruins. Blowing. That three nothing leading.
The total of a powerful in that context of of negativity. I gotta put on the side it's it's it's just tough to things are so self evident and and and that is the the on the watching tiger struggled story in the aftermath of the famous night of November Thanksgiving -- in particular incident just yet as a -- a year of not winning turn out right and watching him struggle and become mortal and and and and this -- we. We all wonder how will 2010 player in this regard with the new tiger. -- just wasn't a physical feeling this was say a a emotional mental problems that he had to overcome. And done and and and he didn't do very good job of it and second thing of course is -- blinded that the fallout from the decision which is a negative in which is a negative story. And -- that they stand up to that there evident to be their -- and aside so I'm just put them over there -- before. In the Olympics in general I was up over the last ten Olympics I enjoy the Olympics. And as a major major us sub plot the entire hockey situation to two games with Canada. The one the USA wins and then the whole week a -- is what -- did that a nation of Canada being in Vancouver being in the country a win their this. They're just reeling -- and worrying that my -- we might not win the gold medal and I can tell you right now that. They would treated every other gold medal they got and they had plenty of them and if they did in order to make sure that they would win the gold medal in hockey and then for the game to be such a riveting game. And such an emotional roller coaster with police tying it up and and and funny when he went Crosby's goal. It was great stuff that was memorable -- of people my portfolio. Of Olympic experiences double is gonna let the members so that would be known before the Olympics but. Well specifically the hockey. Action.
Obtained the right service or your fourth most interesting event was the candidate vs USC gold medal game. In Vancouver. For the Olympics -- the totality of don't exactly -- the fact that the USA beat them the first but for most interest in sports event. Of this year. Where's the gold gave the three candidate the united state -- a -- I'd just say you know it was viewed by 27 point six million Americans the audience in overtime peeked out this is. Hockey now we're talking on Super Bowl not in BA finals. Not Daytona. Not Kentucky Derby we're talking about 27 point six million Americans 34 million watched. Art in overtime and maybe even more significantly as Bob points out. This is the third time I believe that the Olympics were horse or stood on Canadian -- real. I wanna believe and again too -- salary maybe Montreal Calgary had not won. And had -- their own hold her for -- as you will. We talk about the American audience on television. Well Anderson sixteen point six billion Canadians watched which you say well hold on compared to almost 34 million Americans in overtime. However. This accounted for. At least one time. During that game. 80%. Of the Canadian population. We're watching that game we're talking about fondly upon our that you frozen Yukon and -- at -- opened Hudson today. To that statistic it's in Toronto much so. 50%. Of the Canadian. By sheer numbers. Were turned into them. To read that one time and watch a 2%. -- that watched it from flag -- to finish. And to kind of compute what our population is vs Canada. It would be akin to 150. Million Americans. Watching an event. That's. Cloaked.
Another assist game had north of another -- a surprise anybody's been paying attention and and and and reminded us. That it is they're -- they had they feel extraordinarily. Proprietary toward that game. And and they desperately want to win that Goldman because it is.
There. It showing -- five and for the books will be back with 123. Coming up -- Dennis Kelly Bob Bob top five most interesting sports events. -- the year that will. Run its course and 1159. And Clark Ryan Seacrest it'll intrusive and bring in the new year the simple wishful games and they -- No. My fifth is Bruins blown three of meeting -- flyers might. Check the label all audio Jack thank you idea. Fourth. USC can and Goldman gain grinds it was who was way.
Mikey just -- terrible such a noted in Miami that what -- have an audience this Notre Dame phenomenon that does astonished me. Liberty Bowl and truthfully. -- free number three now that does the idea this whole thing -- it can be very personal and and this is not this is not church most of the personal. But that I think I can offer myself up as a microcosm of of what the whole fan experience can be. Why we do buy -- to swipe at the sports. And and my favorite concept as just don't know you go to any win them game. And regular season or in the playoffs and you don't know when something special that you want to remember for a long time when happen. I mean that sets I was. Obvious but you have to. Remember this I think about it you know most games -- routine. You may enjoy them to a degree because appreciate the sport knew what to -- about but the game itself as routine not doesn't distinguish itself from the hundredth of the game to see. Every once while. With no prior warning zero no reason to think anything special gonna happen something magical happen. Such a night was April 20 2010. At Fenway Park. -- I've had season tickets since 1991. And whether he's just season tickets is that you can and have you probably enjoy the experience. Take her grandson Connor Ryan. That game. Anything -- by two runs. Becomes a pinch --
Endowment. Now about it. Number of I'm gonna it is Darnell. McDonald.
Says -- being the excellent by the way it's excellent public address announcer. Voice I would pay one million dollars for two credible now -- I don't know McDonnell. I go. -- I mean seriously watch who -- Ever heard of it's a moment -- you know ties to game. Now. You know I have a certain minor public profile people. -- In the vicinity in and section nineteen wider public profile sure it's -- in I I never engaged but. Six -- and witnessed record called a borderline and solar. Super Bowl. -- it is it is is my expectation any of the house to somebody might recognize that's my pocket and trying to buy up. Who is. With -- Manama I don't notices you know. Allison comes up in the tenth inning bases load. Up to one awful. -- Point where this is not only was an exciting and fun moment. It was a moment my grandson. Who now thanks Donald MacDonald is the combination of Willie Mays Babe Ruth you know and such etc. This is -- and will never forget you'll never forget you know people talk about your personal but the ball he's been at a ballpark before excellent news. And then. Nothing has happened to that that would you know resonates to that and it was so much fun for his excitement and and the rest of the year. It's you know McDonnell and homelessness icon I saw or heard about you know I think he was -- on -- appointment. Is guy. And I'm -- story -- how many people ought to have Daniel -- yeah how about if somebody takes their kid did Daniel not a game first pitch -- Mean except that I wasn't there but but it was there for -- and so for me. It was a special personal. You know moment. But who enjoyed it as a sports fan I enjoyed it. As a summit cares about the ports as the roots expert it's something that the extra layer was being assured it's. That's enjoyed sports does life that's unpredictable old and -- three.
My number three also asked to do with baseball. It does not have to do with the perfect games of Dallas Braden. Or Roy Halladay. It was detail of Armando. Galarraga to great. See Africa who just a couple of weeks after. A holiday. At his perfect game. Turkey perfect game with two outs into the ninth -- I had the are recorded at first base of all the to have. Of higher Jim Joyce -- to blow the call. This speaks to a couple of points number 11 months of boxes is the competence of big league umpires in note. Harping and Jim Joyce who owned up to says that he blew the call what you thought was cut interest which is well. But the graciousness shown by the pitcher. After the games for the that it was called up. Believe a week before that game -- sent down he's he was starting did not give him he was sent down and and that kind of wake them up Lou thank. Anyway but in the context of that time when it seemed important two perfect games now you know gonna -- history -- baseball -- data. A holiday did it in the sky and how he handled it. And how this replay where she purport -- there to watch and.
Vomit on the -- for it was clearly a long call. Not to the magnitude of the don't think it's your call. And in terms of but it was clear they won't call but a call that had -- been blown in any other circumstance. It would have been noted but not obsessed with equipment but obviously he was he was clearly he was out. But it wasn't the most horrible color receipt of that type let alone of -- and is unfortunate that he blew that call object. You're right at the great aftermath of this I think it's -- that's gonna resonate for the rest of each of their hearts. They have a chance to be linked. As and they will be that they choose to maintain this and I have a feeling they will. And in -- blanket sense because without object Joyce handle that so well. -- Rockingham that off the chart system it's a measure -- for all time and I think that those two you know that that's going to be. -- banquet opportunities is going to be some. I hate to be crass commercial opportunity that there will be able to exploit for the rest of their lives because of this. And and it's a statistic but you that's a great one and and night at west across my head yesterday but we're -- crime analyst -- the -- through the cracks.
That's a great odd coming up talked to the Bob and Bob list of interest in moments of 2010 more -- on Dennis and Callahan. Now for -- we it would be the antithesis. Of Daniel Robert because I do believe. That the joy in life comes in it's in anticipation and who wrote the company can't abide that Carly Simon I think. We've progressed I wanted to call your head and anticipation. The post -- catcher kind of like that they were the anticipation. To and he was. The return of Tiger Woods to the masters in. And the reason rice I think it was more curiosity about that when sports event in any we've seen this year for obvious reasons. -- would he come back -- play well would he be subjected to cat called would it be signs with DB. How hard you know all of that stuff in in there was such a run up to that event. That. He actually played a -- retrospect now let's get this article fourth -- fifth in the actually played pretty well and wound -- not winning this year. But if you averaged just two days and weeks leading up to that this group or -- purity in the show. This is gonna be the greatest -- television program of all time. Watching him play in the masters. Was. Here was to meet interest. To see how we would play and interest -- play pretty good party play this year not very good by his standards number three I thought. To me the most interesting part was how -- handled him and how he has been handled and received. This year and I think by and large positive that. Merck is a very forgiving society reporter or the -- year that people have now sympathize. For better or for worse for his plight. And their very light in the very receptive and I think they wanna see Tiger Woods -- another major turn.
Certainly yes I think of those people. Argument number two I went that fast okay I'm sure you trust your return I'd I was that's a master of missing amber and I remember a one juncture that it was. That's seventeen. But there was a moment when he had had he -- but he really would have been right there right right there missed that. And amid crowd was always remember right there ready you could sense there are ready for the explosion and -- happening mystic. It was that was our knowledge of it was them not what I was there I would've wanted a masters in 2010 -- was not any other reason. Tiger Woods last year -- Which again. -- you got me you're stuck with me you know -- got me and my frame of reference and -- and my idea. Holmes DNA. And one and and a major part of mice which Steve and his college basketball. And them. Coach with a gentleman on the final four have been 27. And talking about the whole saga butler. And butler's run to the championship. Game. Butler and he picks a year to go to the -- to game when these finals of an Indianapolis. It is five miles give or take the -- to a mile away on the campus about the universe is so the playing and home. The coaches local. The coach usefulness of suburb designs -- coach looks like he's on its way to senior prom that was all part of the package to Brad Stevens. They get their winning a number of close schemes. Including assemblies beat Michigan State by two. And then we get to the climactic moment and and that -- on amid yes Gordon Hayward almost -- in from 454050. Feet. I missed even a really good look before that point of the hole and it was such an -- and I was one of the many many people knew me when -- updated campus. They were very gracious they that people -- mean walk over to court take pictures shoot free throws -- mean really they were they handled themselves. So well but they seized their moment they -- let me tell you you know -- bookstore was the top and let's stop. But they were really nice about a -- public in an -- schools you can you can Ohio State would then that he picked. -- Can do what it -- of them do that walk in the towel but they did -- but they seized their moment. And it was sweet it was wonderful and it was now and final. -- They were able to earn their way to attempt to gain outside the mainstream of this of the power of the power conferences by -- the system. In basketball that allows you to -- it's on -- they are underway and by winning a conference and then they wonder football we've seen time and again. Well not permit this to happen well football does not want to happen. What they have to Boise State that Kidd missed the two pupils and a relegate them to -- that if you asked Campbell. Instead of a BCS game where they belong and now. Basketball you have a chance to do with so I just for me that was a wonderful story and didn't win. -- about a -- that there they are the they're they're fieldhouse is where the climactic game hoosiers was actually felt. Tell Patricia Mexico and meanwhile Hinkle fieldhouse so it didn't have to win for it to be great story if they want. Its story the number one in your book on your mind office. Once again you deal and Whitney. Not somebody else. It was the Celtics running to the finals come that would in 94 seconds of winning another championship when -- went and animal and a situation when the playoffs began. Here's a team that it won 2727. And a final 54 games. That's a major sampling that's more games than the played in the strike season of 1990000. With just a fifty games that's 27 and 27. There was no reason I didn't have one caller want to -- Tommy what they had reason for optimism but no reason to think they would do anything more than win the first round. And in the -- and would be a very disappointing season would be talking about all the entries at the messed up their season. And instead they knock out Orlando. Easily taken the first two games down there and that that was stunning. That we have that moment the great moment moments the -- though. On the loose ball beating -- to -- as well that's the -- of the -- likely. -- which teams play. And -- and then going out taken out the cavaliers and and being right there with the lakers and of course not having Perkins. In the last game without knock on harp on by the way. There were neck and are up thirteen third quarter up by three not to say 94 seconds they went from. Plus three minus six and four possessions a total that it was second to an applicant to open that's been lost the game and it was fair and square and -- loss -- and Perkins would mean the difference -- that so. But for me that one of it out of basketball guy of Obama -- I am I cut my teeth in the NBA in 1969 at a covered the Celtics at its its foundation of Coke might quote on quote career the foundation is covered it Celtics in the NBA so it was a great bonus from the it was a great exhilarating thing to be back in the mix again with a team that. I didn't expect this one that's winnable.
I get they were supposed when done here. And the fact that they actually just blew weary cavaliers host. They -- rates here yeah it was it was very exciting was missed out my number one Bob. Our -- to do to me with the decision. The reason I say the decision is per couple reasons number one. I -- every cold. Following sports hall sixteen minutes of a person's life. Could possibly change his persona. Based on the decision and how was reached. In how. LeBron James went from. -- guided people celebrated as totally brilliant basketball player. Kind of Everyman kind of guy who did the right thing guy who is very gracious in his interviews a guy who had a good reputation guy who is. I'm standing -- sullied LeBron James. Until the decision. And in a span of 45 minutes of television and ESP it went from being. -- Based on. A just the decision to quote take his talents to -- beach. There -- result set up. Choreographed. By another villain who happened to be gentlemen our business. Jim Gray who took. 37 questions before he got to what should have been the first question. Which was where you play what the -- it and we can be -- to show whether that's the bronze -- ever Carter is. PR guys all the marketing guys well whatever. Also strikes to -- As a reflection of what I call the ESP -- in -- these -- LeBron -- And in past years Michael Jordan and to -- Brett Favre. Wind up being. So hyped up. By a the world wide leader. That suddenly people just trying to get turned off by. And they think that proof positive is the reaction to. Roger Goodell decision about the -- in storage -- here. Which has received no traction by way in my view and the reason why is because I think that -- People have been Brett Favre out. And I'd blame Bristol. For this as I -- think they contributed. To the decision. By hyping this event to beat the band that's one thing that ESPN can do. -- better than anybody else to do so -- amazing things -- that network they do some things that. I can't stomach. But I think when you look at that decision over all and see how it's affected. Not just LeBron James and how we view him. Also affected. Kind of how we view now this NBA season. As a team that we should want to hate -- they are they're the.
Most polarizing team and in American sport they're going from a no no. No -- no. Profile profile mean we have ongoing capable teams of people the Yankees -- Red Sox were heated outside and many people the cowboys. Etc. and nobody heat -- nothing and suddenly the heat on the right team on the question which there. You make excellent point and as I said I just put those -- put that -- and tiger on the side but. But you write about in it's -- speaking I'm thinking once again about the transformation of an an -- so many times over the years prior to this. For his apparent level headed it's in good sense for a common in a common good sense for such a young man was of such an unusual life. In the spotlight consumes about twelve years old and identified as his basketball prodigy. Andy -- did not go to college and he speaks better and has more interest in thoughts then. You know tons of people who went out. I think without thinking about here is the biggest thing could've saved him I thought this is just as. What I think you could say about him he's worked with friends that's fine and he has his best devices and maverick Carter apparently -- a long time friend. But he needed a wise -- But wiser head to understand how -- it had -- wiser head. -- to get in the middle between himself and maverick Carter and whatever other -- that he was you know listening to two to. Explained to him it did to see that happen. Raise the red flag and to my god this thing is not a good idea this is not agree that it just long is this in the weighted DeWitt. Appliances don't do this and know once said that two and -- to an assistant he's. Wanna suggest it's kind of a victim. Of its own good nature. It that he allowed himself the Jetsons swept up -- by his friends that maverick Carter. The witnessed now here's my -- that he's he's a basketball giving it might just he's not a market here's my understanding how this came about. What's your greatest -- I know I talked I spoke to Jim Gray I like al-Qaeda. Kind of accusing us of a bit here I have a nice pleasant social relationship with Jim -- And and -- you know that that that clouds might you know mild kind of compromise with the I wish he would never done this. I'm not gonna I -- the recent personally to come down on to great. But I would say Jim this is the worst mistake in your career that I do believe OK I totally believe that abortion Pete Rose. Because there was reason that -- rose but this is this just. -- something else on. Jim -- it's this idea that maverick Carter at the finals. And that's awful. And so there. Was the decision.
