Two UIC students charged with beating, robbing female cabbie

A pair of University of Illinois at Chicago students beat up and robbed a female taxi driver in the early hours of Saturday, prosecutors allege.

South Korean national Sung Won Chung, 22, of the 1100 block of West 14th Place, and Alexander Choi, 19, the 3100 block of West Medill, were both ordered held on bail of $125,000 Sunday by Judge Jackie Portman.

Prosecutors allege the pair hailed the 56-year-old woman’s cab, then refused to pay the fare and attacked her when they reached their destination on the 1100 block of West 15th St. in University Village.

They pulled her to the ground, then punched and kicked her repeatedly before making off with $22 cash and the cabbie’s cell phone, it’s alleged.

But a witness flagged down a passing police car and directed them to a building Chung and Choi had hidden in, prosecutors said. Police found both men in the building with the stolen cash and phone, and the cabbie identified them as the attackers, according to a police report.

Neither of the students has a criminal record, their attorney Mike Johnson said.
