NR Community Calendar for Feb. 24, 2011 SOUTHERN VIRGINIA MEAT GOAT ASSOCIATION MEETS FEB. 24

The Southern Virginia Meat Goat Association will meet Thursday, February 24, 7:00 p.m. at the Halifax County Agricultural Center, Farm Way Lane, in Halifax. Dr. Kevin Pelzer, from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, will be the speaker. Interested persons are invited. Louise Ware, a representative from U.S. Senator Jim Webb’s office will be at the Halifax Library from 1:00-3:00 p.m., Thursday, February 24, 2011 to meet with constituents who wish to discuss problems and/or issues that they are having with the federal government.

Vietnam Veterans of America, Ch. 840 will have a stew Saturday, February 26, ready at 11:00 a.m. at the VFW Post 8243, Halifax.

The February 28, 2011 meeting the John M. Jordan (Halifax County) Camp #581, Sons of Confederate Veterans Historical Honor Society will be held at The Spare Times Grill for dinner and speaker program commencing at 6 p.m. The speaker will be Ms. Cassy Gray of Cincinnait, Ohio entitled "Let Us Fight It Out." Ms. Gray has just released the second volume of The Chancellorsville Chronicles and dwells into the answer to the Civil War's most enduring question, "What if Stonewall Jackson Had Survived Chancellorsville." Members, prospective members and visitors are invited.

The Business Women's Association of Halifax County will meet Monday, February 28, 6:00 p.m. at The Prizery.

HALIFAX SOIL & WATER BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETS MARCH 2

The Board of Directors of the Halifax Soil and Water Conservation District will conduct its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 2 at Four Oaks at 11:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend.

SPECIAL EDUCATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETS MARCH 3

The Special Education Advisory Committee for Halifax County Public Schools will meet Thursday, March 3, 6:00 p.m. in the conference room at the Department of Pupil Personnel, Mary Bethune Complex, Halifax.

The Dan River Community Ruritan Club will have Brunswick stew for sale Friday, March 4. Order from any member or pick up at Runt Powell's Store after 3:30 p.m.

The Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department will have a breakfast March 5 from 7 -9 a.m. There will be ham, sausage, bacon, eggs, hash browns, grits, sausage gravy and biscuits. Coffee and orange juiice will be available also. We look forward to seeing you.,

The annual Turkey Luncheon will be held Sunday, March 20 beginning at 11:30 a.m at the North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department. The menu consists of turkey, dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, string beans, bread, cranberry sauce, a beverage and homemade dessert. Carry-out plates will be available.

The Old School House Committee will have a stew Saturday, March 26 at 11:00 a.m. Former students of Piney Grove Elementary, Bethel Road Scottsburg are invited, along with everyone else, to attend.

National Day of Prayer event changing time and place. Changes are in the works for this year’s local National Day of Prayer (NDP) celebration that will feature a new event time and location. This year’s event is set for Thursday, May 5, and is scheduled to feature a rising country music duo on the evening program that will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Halifax County High School auditorium. The national theme of this year’s NDP event will be “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” taken from Psalm 91:2. The event is free.

BROTHERHOOD OF ST. ANDREW MEETS EACH FIRST THURSDAY

The Brotherhood of St. Andrew Chapter meetings are the first Thursday of each month at Christ Episcopal Church Parsonage, 360 N Main Street Halifax. Southside VA Community College Middle College and Adult Education are offering GED prep courses Monday-Thursday at the Southern VA Higher Education Center in downtown South Boston for those interested in obtaining their GED. HALIFAX HUMANE SOCIETY MEETS LAST THURSDAY OF EACH MONTH

The Halifax County Humane Society will meet at the South Boston Police Department the last Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. Please plan to attend. The homeless animals of Halifax County need your help.

The agent with Virginia Veterans' Services will now be meeting at the South Boston Library, 509 Broad Street, South Boston on the first, third and fifth Tuesday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If you have any questions, please call our South Hill office at 434-447-3231.

DIVORCE SUPPORT GROUP MEETS SECOND/FOURTH THURSDAYS

If you are alone because of divorce or separation and need help through this difficult time, there is help for you. There is a group of divorced and separated persons who meet at Main Street United Methodist Church every second and fourth Thursday from 7:00-8:00 p.m. All discussions at these meetings are confidential. The church is located at 701 North Main Street, South Boston.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE & SEXUAL ASSAULT SUPPORT GROUPS

If you are, or have been, in a violent relationship, we provide a safe and confidential place to share your feelings with others in similar situations. If you have a friend or relative who has a problem with alcohol, you need to come to the Al-Anon meeting which is a meeting for friends of alcoholics. The meeting is held every Thursday night at 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 800 Main Street.

Mentor/Role Model Program Volunteer Opportunities - Ongoing

The youth of Halifax County/South Boston need you. There are nearly 100 youth in our community that want and need to be mentored. You could make the difference in the life of one of these children. If you are a resident of a long-term care facility (nursing home or assisted living facility) in the counties of Mecklenburg, Halifax or Brunswick and have a complaint, question, or concern that has not been answered to your satisfaction, there is a resource you can call. The ombudsman at Lake Country Area Agency on Aging, Linda Gage, assists and advocates for residents in these counties. You can reach her at (434)447-7661 or 1-800-252-4464, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The local ombudsman protects and represents the rights of persons in nursing homes and adult care residences or those receiving home and community based long-term care. She acts as a resource for information and counseling for issues regarding institution or home-based options for the elderly as well as general issues and concerns by them or their families. The local long-term care ombudsman also seeks to educate consumers of long-term care facilities and their families about their rights and seeks to empower them to find answers to their concerns.
