JCJC in the pink after DH sweep

ELLISVILLE — The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats whipped the Meridian Community College Lady Eagles here twice Tuesday on “Pink Out the Park Day” at Community Bank Park.

In game one, Ginger Lonergan tossed a five-hitter and Shannon Mosley and Stacia Whitaker belted home runs to lift JCJC to a 12-3, five-inning win.

In game two, Lauren Candies allowed two hits and Alex Faciane and Kayla McDaniel hit home runs to lead the Lady Bobcats to an 8-0, six-inning win.

The Lady Bobcats are now 10-2 and host Faulkner State Community College (Ala.) at 3 and 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Meridian took a 2-0 lead in the first when Brooke Dew singled and Nakkia Moore blasted a two-run home run.

JCJC got a run back in the bottom of the first when Haley Brooke Smith singled and scored on Faciane’s double.

The Lady Bobcats scored four runs in the second. Whitaker led off with a home run and Heidi Garcich followed with a single. Smith then delivered a two-out triple to score Garcich and Mosley followed with a two-run home run to make it 5-2.

Jones added a run in the third when McDaniel singled, which was followed by walks to Whitaker and Garcich. Mallory Cowart then reached on an error, allowing McDaniel to score.

The Lady Bobcats plated six runs in the fourth. Mosley drew a walk and Faciane followed with another RBI double. K.T. Perkins then drew a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Brittany Daniel. Jessmar Walters then reached on an error and Jasmine Jefferson entered as a courtesy runner.

McDaniel then walked with the bases loaded to force in a run. Whitaker then cleared the bases with a three-run double. Garcich singled and pinch-hitter Aaron Herrington would double. A sacrifice fly by Mosley scored the final run of the inning.

MCC added a run in the fifth.

Lonergan went the distance, allowed just five hits, walked two and struck out two as she improved to 5-0.

Whitaker had four RBIs for JCJC, while Faciane, Smith and Mosley had two each.

Candies struck out four and walked only one as she upped her record to 5-2.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Faciane led off the inning with a home run to center.

The Lady Bobcats added three runs in the fifth. McDaniel drilled a one-out home run to left and Garcich followed with a walk. With two outs, Mosley singled to left. The ball got past the outfielder and Garcich was able to score. Faciane then drove in Mosley with another run-scoring double to make it 4-0.

In the sixth, Whitaker led off with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Brittany Daniel. Jade McLeod reached on a bunt single and Jessica Upton entered as a courtesy runner. Herrington then reached on a fielder’s choice and McDaniel walked with the bases loaded to force in a run. A throwing error by the catcher allowed the final two runs of the game to score.

Faciane homered and doubled, while McDaniel homered for the Lady Bobcats. McLeod doubled and singled, while Mosley and Whitaker each had a pair of singles. K.T. Perkins and Garcich each had singles.

Kelsey Wilson and Heather Reed each singled for MCC’s only hits. Wilson went five-plus innings and took the loss. Mallory Lowe also pitched.
