MORGANTOWN -- A campaign that began at WVU last year has expanded to more than 100 college campuses in 40 states.
Monday night volunteers from WVU placed door hangers on doorknobs all around Morgantown asking residents to give away their old and unwanted clothes.
"We want people to bring clothes and donate as much as possible and showcase the generosity of Morgantown and surrounding area.," said Chris Yura, Sustain U
Most of the clothes will end up with Sustain U, a Morgantown based company that manufactures clothing from recycled materials.
Sustain U and WVU's Office of Sustainability launched the one shirt" campaign last year. WVU is now one of 116 campuses that participate, with around 3,000 volunteers across the nation.
"It's huge to see the growth of this campaign, especially as a company we believe and I think as a university and as a community that to be great you should serve," said Yura.
Sustain U's founder and CEO Chris Yura said the campaign uses apparel to promote stability. About 10 percent of landfill waste comes from textiles.
"All of us are kind of guilty of throwing away a t-shirt that we thought we couldn't use or thought someone else couldn't use.. but a lot of those things can be used in industrial application and have another life..
The campaign will rely on a large number of volunteers with close to 1,000 expected.
Holly Lentz, a Design and Merchandising professor will send a class of her students to collect clothes.
"Getting involved with the one shirt campaign allows our students to get involved with our community in something they're familiar with in the apparel field," she said.
If you received a door hanger, just leave your old or unwanted clothing on your doorsteps. The same volunteers will pick it up by noon on Wednesday.
Clothes can also be dropped it off by Allen Hall at WVU on Wednesday between 2 and 6 p.m.
