The "Survivor: Redemption Island" episode 1 recap comes from the season premiere on Feb. 16, 2011. There are 18 cast members for the 2011 "Survivor" season, with Rob Mariano and Russell Hantz joining eight of them on each side.
The "Redemption Island" twist to this season will allow those who have been voted off the island another chance to compete. Each episode will have someone voted off the island during tribal council, and they will be sent out to the island. Once there are two people, competitions will take place there, leaving just one contestant left. Each time a new person is sent to the island, this will take place, allowing someone the chance to win many challenges on the island and potentially return to the main group at the end of the season.
Survivor: Redemption Island episode one began with the 16 cast members arriving on the island via a military helicopter. The first 16 thought that they were alone on the island, when suddenly a second helicopter arrived and the two other cast members came off the chopper. They were Boston Rob, who received a nice ovation, and then Rob, who made most of the contestants cringe. Both drew their buffs to join the preformed tribes, and were greeted into the groups. It was at that point that host Jeff Probst explained the rules about how redemption island would work.
