SAN MARCOS — The City Council in Kyle has taken an initial step to bar sales of the synthetic marijuana products "K2" and "Spice."
The council voted 6-1 earlier this week to make the purchase, sale or use of salvia divinorum a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $2,000. A final vote will come later.
Currently, neither Austin nor San Marcos has laws that prohibit the sale or use of K2. Several North Texas cities have taken steps to outlaw K2.
State Sen. Florence Shapiro , R-Plano, has filed a bill that would make possession or sale of K2 on the same level as Ecstasy , PCP and methamphetamines.
Kyle is a city of 23,000 about 22 miles south of Austin.
