Williamsburg gets state grant to improve Route 143

WILLIAMSBURG - Reconstruction of a portion of Chesterfield Road (Route 143) is among 23 projects being funded by the state under the MassWorks Infrastructure Program.

The $420,000 awarded will improve regional motorist access to and from the Hilltowns via Route 143. No other Hampshire County projects were funded in this round of the program.

The new grants bring the state's total investment in MassWorks, in which the state partners with municipalities to support housing and road projects and downtown revitalizations, to nearly $61 million.

Gov. Deval Patrick said in a statement that these investments help communities and also create jobs.

"The MassWorks Infrastructure Program is a great example of how we can stimulate local economies and support projects that will benefit communities for generations to come," he said.

MassWorks is administered by the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development and marks a consolidation and streamlining of six state capital budget programs.

In September, the state received 158 applications for more than $400 million and reviewed these for consistency with program's priorities, which include being "shovel ready" and following the state's sustainable development principles.

Among local projects not yet funded through the MassWorks are $500,000 for building a boardwalk, boat ramp and pavilion at Nashawannuck Pond in Easthampton and more than $2 million for improving water and sewer lines and reconstructing Pine Street in Amherst.

Other funded projects include: $881,992 for added parking spaces and an accessible walkway in Athol; $399,993 for road improvements around the Bernardston Elementary School; $275,000 for road improvements near the Kringle Candle Company complex in Bernardston; and $420,000 for Court Square redevelopment in Springfield.
