Southlake Carroll rallies from 17 down to edge Arlington Bowie

BEDFORD -- Southlake Carroll scored 21 unanswered points to beat Arlington Bowie 21-17 in their Class 5A Division I regional matchup.

Carroll quarterback Kenny Hill had a hand in all three touchdowns as he ran for two and threw another. The Dragons (13-0) will play Arlington Martin at 6 p.m. Saturday at SMU in the state quarterfinals.

Hill hooked up with receiver Sabian Holmes on a 54-yard pass for six points to get Carroll on the board with under 10 seconds left in the first half after a rough start.

"That was huge, we sensed we weren't playing to our tempo and speed," Carroll coach Hal Wasson said. "We just came up and made a play. Fortunately for us Kenny Hill, as he's done all year, and Sabian made the play."

The Dragons managed only one first down and 41 yards of total offense before the big play by Holmes. The senior was Hill's favorite target, catching a game-high five passes for 141 yards. Hill finished with 181 yards through the air and another 82 yards rushing, including touchdown runs of 5 and 1 yards in the third quarter that put the Dragons ahead.

"We had to go in and regroup and we did. None of us are shocked that we came back, none of us are surprised," Holmes said.

The Volunteers were rolling early led by quarterback Kolby Listenbee's 15-yard TD run and running back Russell Hansbrough's 32-yard jaunt into the end zone. Jose Jara drilled a 47-yard field goal with 1:47 left in the first half to take the commanding lead.

"We know our identity, we know who we are," Wasson said. "All due credit to Arlington Bowie, they are a very well-coached, talented football team, but I didn't think we were playing Dragon football in the first half. We told the players at halftime to win one play at a time, and I'm so proud that they chose that mindset."

Carroll's defense responded in the second half by shutting out the Volunteers and finally recovered a fumble midway through the fourth quarter. The Volunteers fumbled five times, losing only the one in the fourth when it was recovered by junior defensive back Tanner Jacobson.

"Our defense played great," Hill said. "They've been good all year but the past few weeks they've really turned it up. Especially against a team like this because of all the explosiveness they have in the backfield."

The Volunteers rushed for 253 yards with three ball carriers gaining over 60 yards, led by Listenbee, who finished with 109.
