The Big Ten will remove Joe Paterno's name from the trophy given to the winner of the conference championship game.
Paterno, the winningest coach in major college football, was fired last Wednesday amid a sex abuse scandal involving former Jerry Sandusky that has rocked Penn State University.
The Big Ten will hold its first championship game on Dec. 3 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
The winner's trophy was to be called the Stagg-Paterno Trophy to honor Paterno and Amos Alonzo Stagg, the coach of the University of Chicago when it was a founding member of the Big Ten.
Stagg and Paterno share the NCAA record for career games coached at 549.
"We believe that it would be inappropriate to keep Joe Paterno's name on the trophy at this time," Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said in a statement. "The trophy and its namesake are intended to be celebratory and aspirational, not controversial. We believe that it's important to keep the focus on the players and the teams that will be competing in the inaugural championship game."
The trophy will now be called the Stagg Championship Trophy.
