ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Fifth-year senior defensive end Ryan Van Bergen (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall) of the University of Michigan football team was named Big Ten co-Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday (Nov. 14).
Van Bergen recorded a career-best 2.5 sacks while tying career highs with three tackles for loss and seven tackles overall in U-M's 31-14 win at Illinois on Saturday (Nov. 12). He sharees this week's Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week with Purdue's Kawann Short.
Van Bergen also was recognized by the College Football Performance Awards as its National Defensive Performer of the Week and Defensive Lineman of the Week. The CFPA also recognized Michigan freshman kicker Matt Wile (San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker) as Kickoff Specialist of the Week. Wile had a career-best five touchbacks on six kickoffs at Illinois.
A starter in all 10 games for the Maize and Blue this season, Van Bergen has accumulated 32 tackles. His eight tackles for loss are tied for best on the squad, and he has 3.5 sacks to go along with three quarterback hurries.
Michigan will finish the 2011 regular season with a pair of home games against Nebraska (Nov. 19) and Ohio State (Nov. 26). This Saturday U-M hosts the Cornhuskers at noon on ESPN.
