Off Beat

Earlier this month, the Dallas Voice newspaper reported on the demise of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy in the military.

The Voice, a gay publication in the Lone Star State, included some comments from gay military personnel.

And one of them was at Beale Air Force Base.

He was identified as "Jeffrey S., an airman first class based at Beale Air Force Base in Northern California," the newspaper reported.

The Voice indicated it may have "disguised" his name and the identities of other gay military personnel mentioned in the story.

"Jeffrey said that since graduating from basic training, he has lived fairly openly in the Air Force," the Voice said. "Jeffrey also said that he was trained for specific technical duties and would be hard to replace."

Jeffrey saw "little opposition among enlisted personnel" to the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell."

"But, he said, one person in his unit did not re-enlist because of the DADT repeal. Others, though, simply didn't care, Jeffrey said," according to the Voice.

The story concluded: "But even Jeffrey, who said he has had little problem with people around him knowing his sexual orientation, said the repeal would be a big relief."

"The threat of losing my job will be gone," he told the Voice. "If somebody asks, I can say I'm gay. I can be myself. I don't have to worry about keeping things secret. Integrity is a core value and I don't like having to lie."

It's not often this column can say people are lucky they live in Marysville, but this appears to be one of those times.

If you're in Marysville and love to skateboard, you can be thankful you don't live in Fremont.

In that Bay Area city, the foes of skateboarding are pushing back against the city's efforts to build a skate park, as the Fremont Argus reported last month.

The City Council backed down when skate park neighbors sued. The city acknowledged its environmental impact report was inadequate.

Down in Fremont, the city wasn't planning some standalone skate park.

No, this was to go into the city's Central Park, adjacent to a water work.

No water works in Marysville, other than the Yuba River.

Fremont intends to go ahead with the skate park, once the environmental paperwork is done.

Unless, of course, the environmental report doesn't come out so well. Then the city might have to look for another spot for its $1.2 million facility.

Some Fremont residents want the skate park moved down the block, closer to the existing Teen Center.

Wow, a Teen Center in Fremont? It must be pretty nice.

Maybe Marysville isn't so great after all.
