NL East Preview

Sports with Jim Clark:

Almost every sane baseball publication is predicting the Philadelphia Phillies to win the National league this year.

With their awesome pitching staff, all-stars all over the field, team speed and power, I would be an imbecile to go with any other team. They should easily win the division. I do expect the Atlanta Braves to keep things interesting for a while and sneak in to win the NL Wild Card.

Atlanta Braves: While the Phillies will draw most of the attention during Spring Training, the Braves have quietly made themselves into a very attractive ball-club. Trading for 2B Dan Uggla will give them much needed power behind C Brian McCann. The Braves pitching rotation is pretty solid and their mix of young and old will provide the team with a good chemistry for a few years to come. Here’s hoping 3B Chipper Jones is successful in his comeback from a torn ACL at age 38.

Florida Marlins: The Marlins enter their 19th and final season at Sun Life Stadium and better hope the Promotions Department is able to attract fans this year. While the pitching is pretty good, this is a .500 club. In the NL East, .500 simply isn’t good enough. I will watch them from time to time to see LF Logan Morrison and RF Mike Stanton, two young players who could be the nucleus of this team in the years to come.

New York Mets: On the field, off the field, it doesn’t seem to matter, the Mets are a mess. P Johan Santana is out until at least July, and what is left of the pitching staff is marginal at best. There is a ton of talent on paper, but on the field there always seems to be something missing. The Mets, once again, will play second fiddle in the Big Apple.

Philadelphia Phillies: Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, Cole Hamels, Shane Victorino, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins. Do I need to go on?

Washington Nationals: The Nats made a splash in the off-season signing former Phillie Jayson Werth to a 7-year, $126 million contract. He will provide some pop and protection for Ryan Zimmerman. Unfortunately, the last meaningful game the Nats will play in will likely be in June.
