Indiana News Summary 02-01-11 - TriStateHomePage.com

Another round of a nasty winter storm is on the way later today.

The first left about a half-inch coating of ice around the Indianapolis metro, with areas of Hamilton County like Westfield and Noblesville getting nearly and inch of ice.

More freezing rain is coming this evening, to be followed early Wednesday by a few inches of snow.

Temperatures will also take a sharp dive, with overnight lows going into the single digits Thursday and Friday nights.

(Indianapolis) -- Not only are thousands of schools closed across Indiana, but there are also some universities which have shut down due to the winter storm.

Purdue, Butler, Anderson and Ball State Universities have all closed.

So too have IUPUI, Indiana University East and Indiana University Kokomo.

Indiana University in Bloomington, however, remains open.

(Indianapolis) -- Hundreds of mourners are saying goodbye to slain Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer David Moore today at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Moore was gunned down last week in the line of duty, shot four times during a traffic stop.

The 29-year-old had only been on the force for four years, but both of his parents have had long careers with IMPD.

The Moore family and IMPD have canceled the funeral procession due to the ice storm.

Moore will be buried in a private ceremony instead at Crown Hill Cemetery.

(Indianapolis) -- A ban on smoking in many public places has passed the Indiana House and is on its way to the Senate.

Lawmakers, however, have exempted bars, nursing homes and fraternal clubs in the latest attempt at a smoking ban in the state.

The bill does include restaurants.

Over the past four years, a smoking ban has passed the House but been killed off in the Senate.

This year, Senate leaders said it will be considered.

Governor Daniels has said if the bill reaches his desk, he will sign it.
