Pittsford Sutherland overcame a seven-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Honeoye Falls-Lima 53-51 Friday in a Monroe County Division III boys basketball game at HF-L.
The Cougars twice had a chance to tie the game in the final 20 seconds, but turned it over with 19 seconds and Dylan Swetman missed a three-pointer with five seconds remaining.
Mike Mulcahy’s steal and layup with 3:23 gave the Knights a 47-46 lead, their first of the game. Chadd Lee hit two free throws to give the Cougars a one-point advantage, but Sutherland took the lead for good after two Zach Salvia free throws with 2:30 remaining.
Bob Blodgett’s layup gave HF-L a 46-39 advantage with 6:20 left in the fourth quarter. The Cougars stayed in front by five until Grant Heyman connected on a three-pointer with 4:14 remaining.
The game couldn’t have gotten off to a better start for HF-L as the Cougars held a 12-point advantage 2:05 into the game. Swetman knocked down his three three-pointers in the run.
Brad Kaczka provided a lift for Sutherland offensively scoring the team’s first 11 points and 13 in the first quarter. The Knights rallied and trailed only 20-17 going into the second quarter.
The Cougars led by as much as eight points in the second quarter and took a 31-26 lead into halftime. Sutherland continued to cut into the lead in the third quarter getting within one, but HF-L took a 44-39 advantage into the fourth.
Kaczka finished with 18 points, while Salvia had 16 for the Knights. Swetman led all scorers with 23 points, while Lee added 11 for HF-L.
Sutherland returns to action at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at Brighton, while the Cougars play at Livonia at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
