Urban Meyer requests to be excused from ESPN duties — Any guesses why?

Aside from when he lost his father, Urban Meyer has appeared on ESPN’s college football coverage every weekend.

Now, in the final week of the regular season, he needs some time off.

Earlier this week, ESPN announced it planned to keep Meyer in the studio all day instead of joining his broadcast team to do the Ohio State game against Michigan. That appears to have been more his choice than ESPN’s.

Now, Meyer has asked to stay off TV entirely, ESPN spokesperson Mike Humes said today.

“Urban Meyer won’t be appearing on ESPN this weekend,” Humes wrote on Twitter. “He requested off his studio assignment and we obliged.”

Meyer seems to be considering, or moving toward accepting, an offer to be the next head coach at Ohio State. The Columbus Dispatch reported this week, citing sources, that he will be introduced next week.

Meyer, who resigned from Florida at the end of last season due to health reasons and wanting to spend more time with his family, denied that any offer has been made and said he has not taken any job.

During the recent Meyer-to-OSU speculation, current Gators coach Will Muschamp cited those two points as reasons he believed Meyer would not take any coaching position in 2012.

“In my conversations with Urban, I would be surprised to see him take a job, based on the things he talked about when he left Florida,” Muschamp said.

Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley said last December he was fine with Meyer coming back to coach another program in 2012, “as long as he’s not at Georgia or something.”

“We’ll be all right,” said Foley, who had already hired Muschamp by that time. “I want what’s best for Urban. I’d have no problem with him coaching again.”
