Suspended defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy has been reinstated by the NFL, following his four-week ban for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
Kennedy, a native of Yonkers who signed with the Giants on Aug. 23, was hit with the suspension on Oct. 11 after he had finally exhausted his appeals. The ban stemmed from a failed test last season when he was a member of the Minnesota Vikings, and Tom Coughlin said the Giants were aware of that when they signed him to a one-year deal that will pay him a salary of $810,000 this season.
The Giants now have a one-week roster exemption, during which the self-described “ best defensive tackle in the NFL ” can practice and the Giants don’t have to clear room on the 53-man roster. They’ll have to do that by next Monday, though, or by Saturday if they want him to play against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.
Kennedy, who also lost $190,588 of that salary during his suspension, has yet to say what drug triggered the failed test, though an NFL source familiar with the situation said it was believed to be a diuretic that was on the NFL’s list of banned substances. The NFL’s drug policy prohibits the league from even telling the teams what triggered the failed test.
