Penarth U16s fail to capitalise on early lead

PENARTH Under 16s had the luxury of a very strong turn-out with a squad of 20 prepared for what had in the past been a very tough match.

Fairwater began with intent but flanker Nick Boudier’s superb try-saving tackle threw down the gauntlet. The new pairing of centres Louis Allen and Riyad Auckbarally was a revelation with both having an immediate impact on the game.

Riyad ‘s 50m run from inside his own half in the first couple of minutes was only brought to a halt by three Fairwater players.

Winger Tom Woodhouse took a catch and began a lovely crossfield move resulting in a barnstorming run by Louis who sliced through the defence to score a well deserved try. This was ably converted by No 10 Miles Harding.

Buoyed by their success with Fairwater on the back foot the forwards pressed again and flanker Rob Rees forced his way though, followed by hooker Mason Goode and prop Sam Hall.

Scrum half Lewis Harrison, enjoying the benefit of a steady scrum, placed a fantastic box kick into the attacking 22m, forcing an error by the full back but alas no score by Penarth.

Flanker Ryan Gratton, replacements Jack Gillanders and Liam Hudd were avid tacklers and jumper James Phillips did well in the lineout.

An attacking phase by Fairwater resulted in an unstoppable overlap. A second try was averted just before half time by excellent defence.

The second half unfortunately was marred by some indiscipline. A slight fracas on the side line brought to a very premature halt a fancy piece of footwork by prop Alan Doyle which most certainly would have been a try if play had been allowed to continue.

Tempers calmed but with a loss of focus Fairwater capitalised on the penalties with more points on the board and a second try.

It is imperative the boys build on the positive. Tackling, passing and scrummaging were all good and with such a big squad, continued hard work and strong personal discipline they can only improve.

Squad: Sam Hall, Mason Goode, Alan Doyle, Ryan Gratton, James Phillips, Matt Allen, Nick Boudier, Liam Hudd, Rob Rees, Jack Gillanders, Lewis Harrison, Miles Harding, Louis Allen, Riyad Auckbarally,Tom Woodhouse, Flynn Williams, Jacob Silvey, Kushal Arjan, Jack Hayward, Joe Hall, Sheng Tong Bei, Henry El-Jawhari.
