Madison County school board President Kenny Johnson will seek a third term in 2012.

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Madison County school board President Kenny Johnson says he will seek re-election in 2012.

Johnson, who has represented the Buckhorn High School district since 2000, made the announcement Friday. This would be his third consecutive six-year term.

An aerospace engineer with Colsa who works at Marshall Space Flight Center, Johnson is heavily involved in the search for a new county schools superintendent. Dr. Terry Davis plans to retire on Nov. 30 , three years before his term ends.

Twice elected as a Democrat, Johnson switched parties earlier this year and will appear on the ballot as a Republican for the first time in the March 13 GOP primary.

"I tend to lean more conservative, so it was a good time to switch," Johnson said Friday. "I think they're proud to have me as much as I'm proud to be a part of it."

His jump to the GOP leaves the school board with four Republicans -- Johnson, Jeff Anderson, Rich McAdams and David Vess -- and a single Democrat, Mary Louise Stowe.

McAdams, who represents the Hazel Green and Meridianville areas, is also up for re-election next year.

Johnson's District 2 school board seat covers the New Market, Riverton, Mt. Carmel and Walnut Grove communities.
