New London - Tournament Most Outstanding Player Karen Matic had a career-high 17 kills to go with 12 digs and a team-high 25 assists as top-seeded Coast Guard Academy won the ECAC Division III New England volleyball title on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Plymouth State.
The Bears, who defeated defending champion Keene State 3-0 earlier in the day, finished 26-6 (13-0 at home) after rallying past Plymouth in the final 23-25, 25-17, 25-23 and 25-18.
It was Coast Guard's fourth ECAC title and second in three years.
Coast Guard trailed 21-19 in the key third game before battling back to tie it at 23-23. A service error followed by freshman Kelsey Hickle's ace gave the Bears the 25-23 win and CGA broke open the final game with four straight points to take an 18-14 lead and never trailed again.
Sophomore Kelsey DePorto had 14 kills, seven digs and a team-high six blocks, junior Keriann Mason added 10 kills and 15 digs, Catherine Walker finished with eight kills and 11 digs, sophomore Sam Marmolejo had a match-high 28 digs and freshman Elise Sako added 15 assists and nine digs.
• Anne Jeute scored two goals as fourth-seeded UConn advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament quarterfinals with a 3-2 victory over Princeton in Storrs. The Huskies (18-2) play Penn State, a 1-0 winner over Northeastern, today at home (2 p.m.) for the right to go to the Final Four.
• Coast Guard senior Trevor Siperek finished 57th in 25:16 over 8K as the Bears placed 15th out of 48 teams at the New England Division III Championship at Bowdoin College. Also for the placing for the Bears were Gary Ezzo (75th, 26:21), Kevin O'Brien (92nd, 29:39), Joe Hill (105th, 26:52) and Myles McCarthy (117th, 27:04).
• Mitchell College placed 33rd with a score of 998. Sherif Ali led the Mariners with a 95th-place finish in 26:43). Also placing for Mitchell were Evan Garrity (182nd, 28:13), Jake Ustjanauskas (190th, 28:20), Drew Castagna (231st, 29:15) and Zach Hoch (306th, 32:50).
• Freshman Beth Gollin placed 55th (22:58 over 6K) as Coast Guard placed 13th at the New England Division III Championship at Bowdoin. Also placing for the Bears were Meghan Kalinowski (82nd, 23:28), Ellie Wu (88th, 23:34), Sarah Blatt (101st, 23:55) and Kendall Auth (123rd, 24:10).
• Conn College tied for 16th place as senior Lindsay Paiva and Kerry Dermody finished in 67th (23:15) and 70th (23:16), respectively. Also placing for the Camels were Lianna Swanson (120th, 24:07), Ally Bonito (124th, 24:11) and Heather Rochford (206th, 25:28).
• Mitchell didn't score as a team, but Bridget Burns was the top finisher at 268th in 26:54. Tierney Caulfield (315th, 29:15) and Breanna Poirier (334th, 30:22) also placed for Mitchell.
• Sean Brackett, a junior from Griswold, passed for 407 yards and four touchdowns, but Columbia lost a shootout to Cornell, 62-41, in the Ivy League. Brackett completed 26 of 47 passes for yards. He also scored on a 12-yard run.
• Montville's Tyler Girard-Floyd passed for 240 yards and four touchdowns, but St. Thomas More ended its season with a 50-26 loss to Williston-Northampton. Girard-Floyd was 15-for-27. Denzel Washington had four catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns and also intercepted a pass, Tre Wilson had four catches for 75 yards and a touchdown and Khalil Whetstone had three catches for 26 yards and a TD and recovered a fumble. Waterford's Nolan D'Amico had five tackles and a sack and Ledyard's Iroquois Reels had six tackles for T-More (3-4).
• Coast Guard freshm an Nate Giorgio won the 125-pound championship and earned Outstanding Wrestler honors to help the Bears finish sixth in the 12-team Roger Williams Invitational. Giorgio defeated Sam Shames of MIT in the final, 13-5.
Sophomore Luke Taylor finished second at 165, losing to MIT's Ryan Madson in the final, while sophomore Luke Taylor was third at 165 and junior Colin Schuster was sixth at 157.
• Johnson Knox won two events and was part of two winning relay teams, leading Coast Guard to a 255-71 win over Wheaton in its season opener. Coast Guard also lost to New York University 149-147. Knox won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.12) and the 50 freestyle (22.04). Marco Tinari, Christian Brindamour, Kevin Smit and Brian McGuiness also won events for Coast Guard.
• Coast Guard beat Wheaton 182-109 and lost to NYU 198-99. Heidi Gayman won the 100 freestyle (56.05) and was part of a winning 400 freestyle relay for Coast Guard and teammate Terri Jozsa won the 200 breaststroke (2:35.41).
