HAYTI, Mo. -- The Senath-Hornersville Lions seventh grade girls basketball team was unable to revenge a regular-season loss to the Kennett Indians Friday night in the championship of the Bootheel Conference Tournament.

Top-seeded Kennett's full-court pressure made it difficult for second-seeded Senath-Hornersville to generate offense most of the night. Kennett held Senath-Hornersville to single digits in the 20-minute contest on its way to a 35-8 championship victory.

"I told them 'we had to take them out of game in the beginning,'" Kennett coach Janet Hilburn said. "We wanted to stop the dribble, press hard and not foul. We wanted to keep the pressure on and that's we did. We held them to two points in the first half. Our defense stepped up to the plate tonight."

Danielle Belt tallied the only field goal for Senath-Hornersville in the first half and led the Lions in scoring in the contest with four points.

Kennett's Heidi Shetley, which entered the contest averaging a double-digit point total, scored eight of Kennett's 10 points in the first period of play. Shetley led Kennett with 12 points in the championship contest.

"They got the ball to me," Shetley said. "We got some good shots early in the game.

"They played a Box and 1 on her just like I thought they would," Hilburn said. "Our guards stepped up. When they missed Jasmine and Shetley got the rebounds and put it back in the hoop for two points.

"It means alot to us," Shetley said of winning the tournament. "I think we played as hard as we could this game."

Jasmine Jones scored seven points for Kennett in the championship. Abigail Wallace, Hadley Hilburn, Anna Wheeler, and Kamesha Wilkerson scored four points each for the Indians.

Selena Montiel and Emily Marroquin scored two points each for Senath-Hornersville.

Both coaches remained optimistic about next season following successful seventh grade seasons. Kennett's only loss this season was to Dexter. Senath-Hornersville lost twice to Kennett.

"We had a fantastic season," Lions' coach Katie Small said. "Our only two losses were to Kennett. I'm really excited about next year and I am very proud of our girls and what they accomplished this season. We didn't get the job done tonight, but have a lot to look forward to in the future.

"We are very excited about next year," Hilburn said. "I've got a strong group of girls and they can do more than just play guard. We've got dribblers and shooters. I'm very excited about next season and hope to go undefeated. We've got a strong team and a lot of girls that are good to work with."

Top-seeded South Pemiscot defeated second-seeded Hayti 19-15 in the eight grade championship.

South Pemiscot finished undefeated against Bootheel Conference teams this season.

I cringe everytime I read where a lower level team is not being taught true fundamentals of the game. I noticed thearticle mentioned Kennett relied on a full court press and SH played a gimmick defense (box and 1). While these may succeed at this level, what about later on in high school? True programs ensure solid fundamentals are taught at all levels. They should be teaching half-court offense and man-to-man defense at this level. Then the varsity coach can use these skills to adapt to whatever works best for his level of talent based on his opponent. FC presses are just lay-up games, and box and 1 defenses teach no defense.
