Men's Basketball: Vikings Win Opener in Disney

Forward Rory Blanche and guard John Allen each scored 14 points, lifting Western Washington to a 74-61 victory over Dominican Friday at the fifth annual Disney West Coast Tip-Off Classic being held at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Elsewhere GNAC teams won two of five exhibition games. Northwest Nazarene outscored George Fox 81-73 and Simon Fraser clobbered Columbia Bible 109-59 .

Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Alaska Anchorage sustained losses. The Falcons were beaten by the University of Washington 77-70 , the Wolves fell to Portland State 91-82 and the Seawolves lost at Azusa Pacific 71-64 .

Blanche, who also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, scored 12 points in the first 20 minutes to give the Western Washington a 33-32 lead at halftime. Allen had 10 points in the second half.

WWU opened up a nine-point lead (47-38) with 12:20 left in the game on a layup by Rico Wilkins, who had eight of his 12 points in the final period.

But Dominican cut that advantage to two (50-48) with 10:01 to go and was within six (58-52) at the 7:07 mark.

The Vikings then scored 13 straight points to take a 19-point lead, their biggest of the game, with 3:44 left. Dominican never got closer than 13 after that.

Ryan McIntosh scored a game-high 15 points for the Penguins, including 13 in the first half. WWU, which did not make a 3-point field goal in 11 attempts, had just 10 turnovers to 24 for Dominican.

JB Pillard scored 24 points to lead Northwest Nazarene to its win against George Fox.

NNU also received double-figure efforts from Anthony Golden with 15, Michal Kurimsky with 14 and Andy Maxwell added 12. Anthony Sanchez paced the Bruins with 24 points.

The Crusaders shot 60.9 percent (28-46) from the floor and were 10 of 20 from the three-point line as Maxwell went four of seven from the arc and Golden added three more treys.

The Crusaders also out-rebounded GFU 31-19 with Pillard leading the way with eight.

Javari Williams led Simon Fraser, which took the opening tipoff and never trailed against Columbia Bible, with 23 points.

Also in double figures for the Clan were Zack Frehlick with 18 points, Daniel Deflorimonte with 16, Connor Lewis and John Bantock with 15 each and Ibrahim Appiah with 13.

Williams (12 rebounds), Frehlick (14 rebounds) and Appiah (11 rebounds) all had double-doubles.

The Clan, which led 60-32 at halftime, outrebounded their opponents 55-24 and also forced 28 Bearcat turnovers.

C.J. Wilcox led four double-figure scorers with 19 points leading Washington to its win over Seattle Pacific at UW's Edmundson Pavilion.

Andy Poling and Jobi Wall led SPU with 12 points each. Poling also had seven rebounds.

UW scored the game's opening eight points and never trailed, extending its margin to as many as 19 points.

SPU scored the final three points of the first period to draw within 33-26 at halftime, but the Huskies opened the second half with a 13-2 run, including points from six different players.

That surge resulted in a 46-28 advantage with 15:43 left to play.

SPU shot 26 percent (8 of 31) in the first half, but improved to 44 percent (14 of 32) in the second to finish at 35 percent for the game (22 of 63).

Blair Wheadon scored 24 points and his back court mate Kyle Long added 14 in Western Oregon's loss at Portland State.

The Wolves led 19-7 in the first nine minutes before the Vikings hit nine of their next 10 shots in outscoring WOU 32-5 the rest of the half.

Wheadon hit 9-of-15 shots and three treys to help keep the Wolves in the game. The Vikings, who outrebounded WOU 43-29, were led by 21 points from Michael Harthun.

Taylor Rohde scored a game-high 20 points and Mario Gill had 12 points and eight rebounds in Alaska Anchorage's loss. Azusa Pacific was led by guard Marshall Johnson with 15 points.

UAA guard Kyle Fossman joined Rohde and Gill in double figures scoring 10 points.

The Seawolves outshot Azusa 43.1 percent (22-51) to 40.0 percent (22-55) and also had a 39-30 rebounding advantage, but committed nine more turnovers (16-7).

West, Barkdoll Selected in NBA D-League Draft

Former Alaska Fairbanks basketball star Parrish West was drafted in the sixth round by the Dakota Wizards in the 2011 National Basketball Association D-League draft on Thursday.

West, a two-time All-American at UAF, was taken 84th overall by the Golden State Warriors affiliate.

“Parrish has shown he can really score with the ball,” first-year head coach Nate Bjorkgren said.

“We know that he can put up the points, make big shots and the ability to score itself is a huge asset," Bjorkgren said.

"I'm really looking forward to getting into camp to see how he fits in with my system, with the Golden State Warriors system, how he defends and how he can handles everything.”

He was the first of two GNAC players who went in the draft, as Northwest Nazarene's Brian Barkdoll was taken one pick later by the Tulsa 66ers.

West led the nation in scoring last year among Division II players averaging 27.2 points per game. He also averaged 6.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.8 steals. Barkdoll averaged 13.7 points and 8.4 rebounds for the Crusaders.

Women's Basketball: NNU Wins Homecoming Game

Megan Hingston scored 19 points to lead Northwest Nazarene to a 70-63 win over Lewis & Clark in the NNU Hall of Fame Homecoming Game Friday night at the Johnson Sports Center.

In the only counting game Friday, Hawaii Pacific outscored Saint Martin's 60-41 in the opening round of the Disney Division II Tip Off West Coast Classic.

All the rest of the games were exhibitions including Simon Fraser's 83-42 win against Vancouver Island and losses by Seattle Pacific and Central Washington to George Fox ( 70-67 ) and Portland State ( 85-69 ).

Hingston also had 11 rebounds in NNU's exhibition contest.  Joining Hingston in double figures scoring were Bri King and Alla Dzhidzhiyeshvili with 13 and 11, respectively.

Megan Spence and Kristina Williams paced Lewis & Clark with 15 each and Neva Hauser added 10.  Williams matched Hingston with 11 rebounds for a double-double of her own.

Taiyande Huskey scored 14 points to lead Hawaii Pacific past Saint Martin's.

HPU led by just two points at halftime, but held the Saints to only six field goals in 25 attempts in the second period. Chelsea Haskey was SMU's only player in double figures scoring 11 points. She also had nine rebounds.

Skye Savini had 11 points and Paris Gravely had 10 for the Seasiders, who held the Saints to a 27.8 percent shooting percentage (15 of 54).

Carla Wyman scored 17 points and Kristina Collins had 11 assists in Simon Fraser's victory.

The Clan also got 14 points from Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe and 12 from Erin Chambers. Jocelyn Jones led Vancouver Island with 10 points.

Jami Roos scored 15 of her 23 points during the second half – including six free throws in the final 18 seconds of the game – as George Fox rallied from a 16-point deficit to defeat Seattle Pacific.

Rachel Murray led the Falcons (0-3 in exhibition play) with 16 points. Jordan Harazin and Betsy Kingma each had 10 points.

SPU was up 65-61 as the clock ticked into the final minute. Roos drained a trey with 55 seconds left to make it 65-64.

The Falcons missed a jumper at the Bruins came back down court. Roos was fouled by SPU's Nyesha Sims, the fifth of the game for the senior guard.

Sims also was hit with a technical foul, and Roos drained all four free throws with 18.8 seconds showing to put George Fox on top 68-65.

Aubree Callen drained a free throw with 15 seconds left, and Katie Thralls added another with14 seconds remaining, bringing SPU within one at 68-67.

But the Falcons were forced to foul, and Roos went back to the line, hitting two more to establish the final three-point margin.

Alex Dunn had 10 points and 13 assists and Central Washington made 10 of 19 three-point attempts in its loss at Portland State.

The Vikings, who are the pre-season favorite to win the Big Sky Conference, shot 60.4 percent from the field for the game including 22 of 29 (75.9 percent) in the second half.

Central Washington's shooting was also quite efficient in the second half, when the Wildcats made 16 of 29 field goals (55.2 percent) and 6 of 10 three-pointers.

Dunn was one of four double-figure scorers for the Wildcats. Sophie Russell led CWU with 17 points, making six of nine shots including all three of her treys. Jessica VanDyke had 14 points and freshman Courtney Johnson added 11.

Portland State was led by Allison Greene, who scored 21 points on 9 of 10 shooting to go with six rebounds off the bench.

A first-half goal by midfielder Justina MacDowell stood up as Western Washington blanked Simon Fraser 1-0 in a GNAC women's soccer contest Friday at Terry Fox Field.

MacDowell found the net from five yards in the 37th minute. The goal was her fourth of the season and her third game-winner. Joana Houplin was credited with her team-leading fourth assist.

Goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs was credited with one save in recording her GNAC-leading 11th shutout. She finished the season with a scoreless streak of 476 minutes and 43 seconds.

The Vikings (10-5-3, 9-4-1), who were undefeated in their last five games (4-0-1), dominated play with a 23-4 shot advantage and had all five corner kicks against the Clan (2-12-2, 1-11-2).
