Friday Review: Penultimate sacrifice

Deutsche Telekom reveals the hardships people are prepared to endure to keep their smartphones.

Today is the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year, and while everybody should take a moment to remember the ultimate sacrifice paid by so many in conflicts all over the world, plus several more moments to ignore the many inane comments remarking on how quirky it is to have 11/11/11 appear on all the calendars, there was also an opportunity earlier this week to contemplate the hardships people are prepared to endure to avoid giving up using their smartphones.

"43% would give away their beer," revealed Andy Lesser, senior vice president of service management at Deutsche Telekom, at the inaugural Total Telecom World in London on Monday.

Google surveyed 5,000 U.S. smartphone owners, asking what they would be prepared to give up in order to keep using their smartphones for a month. 36% of respondents said they would forego chocolate before their smartphone; 26% would not wear their high heels for a month; and 34% would give away their Super Bowl ticket.

"20% would even omit cable TV for a month to keep their smartphone," Lesser noted.

Various withdrawal symptoms and feelings of isolation would doubtless creep in were I to be deprived of my smartphone for a month, but nothing that beer couldn't numb. And given that I limit my high-heel wearing strictly to weekends spent at the docks... maybe I should just leave it there, actually.

Lesser used the unusual survey to point out that consumers are using their smartphones everywhere, all the time, to do almost everything. As such, it is crucial that operators take measures to educate developers about the impact that their applications can have on their networks.

"Application developers are not really aware of the needs of mobile networks," she said, pointing out that resource-friendly features can be incorporated into apps that have no effect on the customer experience, but would reduce the signalling load on networks and maintain battery life.

Lesser was just one of many senior industry representatives taking part in Total Telecom World this week.
