• The series: Portland State and Seattle are tied in the all-time series, 7-7. After nearly 30 years without a meeting, the two schools have met six times in the last three years. PSU leads those games, 4-2, including 2-1 in the Stott Center.
• Last year: Portland State swept the season series, winning 83-76 at PSU and 81-71 at Seattle in the season finale... in the Stott Center win, Melvin Jones had a game-high 23 points for the Vikings. Chehales Tapscott added 12 points and 10 boards. PSU won the rebounding battle, 42-33, including 21 on the offensive glass... Jones scored 25 points as the Vikings shot 52% from the field and 50% from three-point range in a win at Key Arena... Aaron Broussard had 33 points and 13 rebounds in the two games for Seattle.
• The Redhawks: Seattle is a Division I independent program playing its first game of the season... the Redhawks were 11-20 last season... three starters and five letterwinners return from that team... SR F Aaron Broussard is the top returner, averaging 14.5 points and 7.7 rebounds last season... SO G Sterling Carter averaged 13.8 points and hit 85 three-point field goals on the season... SR G Cervante Burrell averaged 10.9 points and 3.5 assists.
• A Stott Center Dagger: Aaron Broussard hit a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer against the Vikings in February 2010 in the Stott Center. The Redhawks won that game, 80-77.
• Head Coach Cameron Dollar is in his third season and has a 28-34 record. Dollar is 39-56 in three years as a head coach... he is 2-2 all-time against the Vikings.
Tyler Geving begins his third season as Head Coach and seventh season overall with the Portland State program. Geving has a 27-36 record with the Vikings. He was 13-19 in 2009-10 and led PSU to the Big Sky Tournament semifinals. In 2010-11, his Vikings were 14-16 overall.
Geving is a 1996 graduate of Central Washington and has been in collegiate coaching for 17 years.
The third-year Head Coach is assisted by Andy McClouskey (2nd year, Oregon State, 1982), Eric Harper (7th year, Central Washington, 1995) and Anthony Owens (3rd year, Great Falls, 2006). Former Viking player Mickey Polis is the Director of Operations (3rd year, Portland State, 2009).
Geving's record breakdown:

RECENT GAME: VIKINGS DROP OPENER AT DENVER, 69-61
Denver, CO - Center Nate Lozeau scored a career-high 19 points, but the Portland State Vikings were otherwise stagnant on offense, losing their season-opener at Denver, 69-61.
Chehales Tapscott added 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Vikings. Denver's Brian Stafford scored a career-high 32 points for the Pioneers.
PSU was a chilly 2-13 to start the game, with the only buckets by Lozeau. The Vikings trailed 10-4 early.
Stafford hit four of five three-pointers in the first 12 minutes of the game, staking Denver to a 23-16 lead.
Lozeau, who had a big first half, gave the Vikings their first lead at 27-26 on a basket inside at the 5:42 mark. It was his third straight basket and brought PSU all the way back from a seven-point deficit.
Denver went into the halftime locker room with a 34-31 lead. The Pioneers hit 8-16 three-pointers, including 6-7 by Stafford who had 18 points.
PSU's inside game kept it in the contest as Lozeau and Tapscott combined for 24 points and 12 rebounds in the half. The Vikings outrebounded Denver, 23-9, but shot only .419 and made one three-pointer.
Both teams struggled to score in the second half until Denver mounted an 11-2 run to take the largest lead of the game at 49-37 with 9:52 to play. Portland State never drew closer than seven until the final minute.
The Vikings couldn't get a perimeter game going against a Denver team that had great size at all positions. PSU's trio of starting guards combined to hit just four of 27 field goals.
“Their length does bother you,” said Geving. “They closed out on us well and we were always shooting a contested shot. And when we drove they did a good job of collapsing and stopping us.”
Denver shot 24-50 from the field (.480), while Portland State was only 22-60 (.367). PSU made just one of eight from three-point range. The Vikings won the rebounding battle, 42-26.
Lozeau finished with 19 points and seven rebounds, hitting 8-12 shot from the field. Tapscott had 18 points on 6-14 shooting and 6-9 free throws. Charles Odum added 13 points.
“We executed what we wanted to do inside, Lozeau with 19, Tapscott with 18, but we couldn't make anything happen outside,” said Viking Coach Tyler Geving.
GAME NOTES: It was a first-ever meeting between the Vikings and the University of Denver, members of the Sun Belt Conference… Tapscott's double-double was his seventh in 25 career games… PSU played without junior forward Martin Whitmore, who is recovering from an elbow injury suffered in the exhibition win over Western Oregon. He is out indefinitely.
• PSU was 10-5 at home in 2010-11, 4-4 in Big Sky home games... over the last five seasons, PSU is 55-14 at home, including 29-11 in Big Sky Conference games.
• The Vikings were 4-11 on the road in 2010-11, including 2-0 in neutral site games... PSU was 1-7 in Big Sky road games... the Vikings are 0-1 on the road this season.
• PSU has gone 111-38 in 149 games at the Stott Center since the 1996-97 season. Including home games at Memorial Coliseum (12-6) and the Rose Garden (19-9), the Vikings are 142-53 at home over the past 16 seasons.
• PSU is 37-27 in Big Sky games since the start of the 2007-08 season, 42-28 including tournament games.
INSIDE PRESENCE: Portland State got outstanding play from its two starting big men in the loss at Denver. SR C Nate Lozeau scored a career-high 19 points to go with seven rebounds. Lozeau hit 8-12 shots from the field and 3-5 at the line. SR F Chehales Tapscott added 18 points and 12 rebounds. Tapscott was 6-14 from the field and 6-9 at the line. Tapscott also had two assists, two steals and a blocked shot. His double-double was the seventh for him in 25 career games at Portland State.
ON THE OTHER HAND: The perimeter starters were stone cold. Until SR G Charles Odum hit three late field goals, PSU's three starting guards were 1-24 from the field. Odum finished 4-11 overall and the three perimeter players were 4-27. JR G Lateef McMulland and JR G Michael Harthun were each 0-8 from the field.
NEWCOMERS: JR F Michael Harvey had the most playing time off the bench with 20 minutes. He scored four points with two rebounds and two blocked shots. FR C Brandon Cataldo had two points and three rebounds in six minutes. FR F Kidus Ephrem played three minutes, scoring two points. FR G Jerron Smith played only the closing seconds of the game.
SOMETHING'S MISSING: The Vikings were without three key players at Denver. Those three would likely be the first three off the bench if available. JR F Martin Whitmore is out indefinitely with an elbow injury suffered in the preseason exhibition game with Western Oregon. Whitmore provides much-needed perimeter shooting that was missed at Denver (1-8 three-pointers made). FR G Gary Winston is awaiting NCAA clearance due to his transfer status from Walla Walla CC (where he did not play last year). Winston would serve as the backup point and provide minutes at shooting guard... also missing was JR F Renado Parker, who will not be eligible until the end of fall term due to his transfer status (arriving for winter term last year).
SHOOT!: Portland State, which has led the Big Sky Conference in scoring the last four years, struggled to score at Denver due to poor shooting (.367/.125). The Vikings made just 1-8 from three-point range. The fewest three pointers PSU made in any game last year was three.
• Portland State returns two starters and three letterwinners from the 2010-11 squad. Seniors Charles Odum and Chehales Tapscott will lead the Vikings in 2011-12. Odum, a guard, was a second-team All-Big Sky Conference selection last year, averaging a team-best 14.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and shooting 52% from the field. Tapscott, a forward, averaged 11.8 points and 8.1 rebounds to rank second in the Big Sky Conference.
• Among six National Letter of Intent signees, the Vikings should have addressed their needs coming into the season. Point guard Lateef McMullan, a transfer from Citrus JC, is the quick playmaker the Vikings need. Freshman guards Gary Winston and Jerron Smith have the scoring ability necessary at the off-guard spot. Junior forward Martin Whitmore brings three-point scoring ability the Vikings need to replace with the graduation of Melvin Jones and Phil Nelson. Junior forward Michael Harvey brings supreme athleticism as a slasher and the ability to defend a number of positions. Freshman forward Kidus Ephrem is an athletic player that will lend depth to the Vikings inside. Sophomore Dre Winston, a transfer from Washington State who will redshirt in 2011-12, may be the point guard of the future for the Vikings.
• Three redshirts figure to make significant contributions in 2011-12: JR G Michael Harthun, JR F Renado Parker and FR C Brandon Cataldo. Harthun transferred from Washington State where he played two seasons and should fit nicely in the shooting guard role. Parker played at North Idaho JC and brings a powerful post presence despite being only 6-5. Cataldo is a promising 6-10 center who spent last year getting his game and body in better condition after missing most of his senior year in high school with a broken leg.
• PSU lost five seniors from the 2010-11 squad: guard Melvin Jones (11.5 ppg, 2.4 apg, 72 3-pt FG), forward Tree Thomas (9.7 ppg, 3.2 rpg), forward Phil Nelson (6.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg), forward Paul Guede (4.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg) and guard Alonzo Brandon (1.6 ppg). In addition, sophomore guard Chris Harriel (12.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg) elected to transfer following the season and junior guard Dane Johnson (2.8 ppg, 2.9 apg) elected not to return.
• With a 72.3 scoring average in 2010-11, Portland State led the Big Sky Conference in scoring offense for the fourth straight year. Scoring meant winning for the Vikings. PSU was 8-1 in games in which it scored at least 80 points.
• Head Coach Tyler Geving begins his third season at the helm in 2011-12. The Vikings improved from 13-19 in year one to 14-16 in year two under Geving despite playing two fewer games. He spent four seasons as an assistant at PSU before being named Head Coach.
• The modest improvement in wins was significant for the Vikings as they lost 33 games to injuries to four different players in 2010-11. Included was Chehales Tapscott missing six games during the middle of the season with a knee injury (and surgery). Phil Nelson, expected to be a top scorer for the Vikings, missed he first 14 games with a broken foot. PSU played 13 games with just nine available players.
• After placing seventh in the Big Sky Conference in 2010-11, the Vikings are a consensus number-five pick in 2011-12 by Big Sky Coaches and Media.
Portland State will play a 30-game schedule, including 12 at home. The Vikings play in a preseason tournament at the University of Wyoming and will also travel to an opponent to be named for an ESPN Bracketbuster game. The Vikings face Oregon and Oregon State in the same year for the first time in nine seasons, although they will not play the University of Portland for the first time since 1998.
The 16-game Big Sky Conference schedule begins after Christmas. The six-team Big Sky Conference Tournament takes place Mar. 3-7.
“Weber State is the team to beat, with the best player in the league. With Damion Lillard on the floor they are a pretty special team,” said Geving. “But, I think on any given night, anybody can beat anybody in this league. After Weber State, I think anyone can finish second through ninth.”
VIKINGS SIGN PROSSER EARLY: Portland State men's basketball coach Tyler Geving announced the signing of Lamont Prosser on Nov. 8 to a National Letter of Intent for the 2012-13 academic year. Prosser is currently a sophomore forward at Sheridan (WY) Junior College.
Prosser, 6-8, 255-pounder from Fort Wayne, IN, was a second team All-Region 9 selection last season at Sheridan. In 34 games, he averaged 12.2 points and 6.7 rebounds while shooting .542 from the field.
“Lamont is a big low-post presence,” said Geving. “Losing (senior starting center) Nate Lozeau (next year), Lamont is a guy that can step right in to that role and play at the Division I level. He is a proven back-to-the-basket player. I am excited about his height, size and ability to play with his back to the basket.”
“Coach (Anthony) Owens did a great job of recruiting Lamont and building a relationship with him and his family.”
Prosser will give the Vikings quality size in 2012-13 as they will lose Lozeau and top rebounding forward Chehales Tapscott to graduation.
