Hasselhoff, media have birthday fun

CORRECTION ON 07/26 -- Las Vegan Lionel Hollins played college basketball at Arizona State University, not UNLV, as reported in Norm Clarke’s column in Monday’s Las Vegas Review-Journal

The suspicion lingers: Did The Hoff pull one off on the media over the weekend?

It was supposed to be a celebration of David Hasselhoff's 59th birthday, with Saturday appearances at Encore Beach Club and Blush Boutique nightclub at Wynn Las Vegas.

Then news broke (leaked?) that The Hoff blew up at his 31-year-old girlfriend, Hayley Roberts, early in the evening, with security summoned to his Wynn suite.

That's all believable enough. The loveable lug has a history of occasionally going off the rails. And both could have been struggling with jet lag considering they made a long flight from Europe two days earlier and reportedly left for Las Vegas at 5 a.m. Saturday.

A red carpet was planned for 11:30 p.m. and it had all the elements of another celebrity train wreck.

But when they arrived, pretty much on time, there was The Hoff and Hayley, all smiles and affectionate as they faced the red carpet cameras.

After some small talk, I asked Hasselhoff about the TMZ.com report of a nasty disturbance.

He immediately started moving away, but turned and said, "Nothing to it."

So security came to the room, but there was no disturbance at all, I said.

He stopped, leaned down and kissed Roberts on the cheek.

"That's the disturbance right there," he said, pointing to Roberts.

Back to my suspicions. A number of media received calls on Friday saying The Hoff hoped we would be joining him.

That never happens in this business, but like I said, he's a decent guy who we all pull for.

While surfing the Internet on Sunday, I read that he tweeted this on Friday night:

"Having a birthday party at Blush on Saturday in Vegas ... It's gonna rock ... come and play ... PS Who's engaged?" (turned out to be his girlfriend's sister).

Tweet after tweet urged fans to attend the party or watch him (last night) in CBS' new series, "Same Name."

Nothing wrong with that, either.

But I'm going with: It was all orchestrated to promote his new show.
