Families may swim for free Saturday morning at the Marriott Starr Pass Resort, as long as they call in advance because space is limited.

The event, arranged by the Ward 1 City Council office, runs from 9 a.m. to noon at the resort, 3800 W. Starr Pass Blvd.

Call the council office at 791-4040 to make a "Free Family Fun Swim Day" swimming reservation.

Sunscreen will be available at no charge from Carondelet Diabetes Care Centers/St. Mary's Hospital.

Food will be available for purchase and the hotel is offering summer rates for those who wish to spend the night, Councilwoman Regina Romero's office said in a news release.

Massive solar tower is planned 130 miles west of Phoenix

PARKER - Plans are under way for a massive solar tower twice as high as the Empire State Building and right in the middle of the Arizona desert.

A company called EnviroMission wants to break ground next year on the solar project, 130 miles west of Phoenix in La Paz County, The Associated Press reported. EnviroMission says the Southern California Public Power Authority has already agreed on a 30-year power purchase agreement.

Fake state health inspector extorting Phoenix businesses

PHOENIX - The Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health is warning Phoenix businesses to watch out for a man impersonating a state health inspector.

ADOSH officials said a man claiming to be an ADOSH inspector has visited several businesses, including two restaurants, and threatened them with citations. In some cases, he offered not to issue a citation if the business owner gave cash or a check.

ADOSH said their compliance officers always show photo credentials immediately upon entering a business. Officers also never issue citations in the field or request money.

Study: Phoenix bowl games generated $354.6 million

PHOENIX - A study by Arizona State University shows bowl games played in the Phoenix area generated an estimated $354.6 million for the Arizona economy this past winter.

The economic bonanza from visiting football fans set records for the BCS National Championship Game and the Insight Bowl, The Associated Press reported.
