The Connecticut Huskies are coming off an unforgettable season that ended with a trip to the BCS Tostitos Fiesta Bowl out in Arizona. It was an 8-4 season, but ended with five consecutive wins in Big East play.
It also ended with the departure of star running back Jordan Todman and head coach Randy Edsall who built UConn into the division I program it is today. He called Maryland his dream job, but life goes on for Husky fans across the state of Connecticut.
Jeff Hathaway went with a safe hire when he made Paul Pasqualoni the new head coach. It seems conservative but I believe Pasqualoni and offensive coordinator George DeLeone have a plan in place to jump start one of the worst passing offenses in the country.
Pasqualoni has been confident in his first few months at UConn. He doesn't believe in rebuilding and thinks this UConn team is prime to win right now. They bring back a core group on defense that includes Jerome Junior, Bhidi-Reh-Wilson, and Kendall Reyes.
The defense is going to carry the Huskies this year, but the offense should surprise a lot of people. It looks right now that Mike Box has the inside track on the starting job at quarterback. The redshirt Sophomore from Georgia saw limited action last season, but showed he isn't afraid to roll outside the pocket.
D.J. Shoemate is expected to carry the load as the senior running back who transferred last year from USC. He is a big kid who has speed and a lot of athleticism. He can also catch the ball out of the backfield.
The spring game was ugly mostly due to wet, rainy, cold conditions. It didn't give us a strong indication of what we are dealing with headed into the fall.
With August approaching next week and practices opening to the media there will be a lot more opportunity to see how this UConn football team is adjusting to the new head coach.
It will be weird not seeing Edsall on the sideline come September 1st, but Pasqualoni is determined that he builds on what Edsall started.
