REDLANDS - The Redlands University men's basketball team, getting 27 points and nine rebounds from senior center Jordan Sanvictores, remained in the upper bracket of the SCIAC standings with Saturday's 83-68 win over visiting Whittier College.
The Bulldogs (7-9 overall, 4-1 in conference) entered conference play tied with La Verne (8-7, 3-1) for second and a game up on Whittier (7-9, 2-3).
With Redlands maintaining 6- and 10-point leads for most of the second half, the Poets sliced that advantage to 67-61 on a free throw from Greg Preer with 4:10 remaining.
That's when Sanvictores pushed the lead back to double digits when he rebounded two missed jumpers from teammate Tristan Kirk (Redlands High) and converted consecutive putbacks.
On the second offensive rebound, Sanvictores was fouled by Whittier's Willie Mebane and sank the subsequent free throw to put Redlands ahead, 72-61, with 2:40 left.
In between Sanvictores' makes, Whittier hurt itself with a missed layup followed by a turnover.
The Poets trimmed a point from their deficit on a free throw by Damon Perry at 2:22, but the Bulldogs scored on a back-door layup from Andrew Mills off an assist from Kent Ervin that put Redlands ahead 74-62 with 1:48 remaining.
Sanvictores finished 13 of 16 from the floor while Kirk, Mills and Stephen Call each added 10 points for Redlands.
Perry (10 rebounds) and guard Ricky Kamayatsu (Whittier High) scored 15 points
apiece for Whittier. Guard Paul Davis led the Poets with 16 points.
Despite trailing for most of the first half, the Bulldogs scored the final four points in taking a 34-30 advantage at the break.
Davis tied the game at 30-30 at 1:07 with a free throw.
The Bulldogs answered with a 2-footer from 6-4 senior forward Matt Dietrich and ended the half with a quick bounce pass from Ervin to Kirk for a layup with two seconds to go.
Whittier took its biggest lead of the first half at 14-6 with 13:03 remaining on a 3-pointer from Davis, compliments of an assist from freshman guard Tyler Hagan.
The Poets took their eight-point lead behind a 12-4 run fueled by five points from Davis.
Redlands, however, responded with a game-tying 8-0 spurt over the next 2:48. All of the points were scored by Sanvictores, who hit three inside baskets and a jumper.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps defeated Caltech 79-43 on Saturday. For the Beavers it was their last chance to end their epic conference losing streak before Monday, when it will be exactly 25 years since their last conference win.
"I'm glad we got the victory here," Claremont-Mudd coach Ken Scalmanini said. "I think Caltech is so much improved. We do everything like we do for any other team now.
"This is a game you can't put in the bag anymore."
The visiting Stags also were not a likely candidate to be the team to bring an end to the dubious streak. They are, after all, two-time defending SCIAC champions and left Saturday's game atop the standings at 5-0.
"Claremont is a great team," Eslinger said. "They have a great program and they came out and executed what they wanted to do.
