Third-quarter spurt lifts Birmingham Marian girls over Livonia Ladywood

Birmingham — Marian ran off 17 consecutive points in the third period Friday night to rally from a 26-24 halftime deficit and topple Livonia Ladywood in Catholic League girls play, 52-42.

Six-foot senior forward Mara Mulroy sparked the third-quarter outburst for Marian (9-4, 4-2), connecting on a pair of 3-pointers, a putback and jump shot that closed the run.

Andrea Anastos sank a free throw as the period ended for Ladywood (10-2, 3-2), which found itself trailing 43-27.

But the visitors came roaring back in the final quarter, cutting their deficit to five points, 47-42, with 1:01 remaining.

Marian held on with three free throws, two by 5-7 senior guard Sara Zawacki and another by Mackenzie Fleischer, and a driving layup by Mulroy, who finished the game with 17 points.
