Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince of Bell Air is actually the Shredder from TMNT
Two of my favorite shows from childhood now have a newfound link. Our favorite 90s uncle, as recently discovered by this writer, also happens to play the arch enemy role on one of the greatest cartoons of all time. James Avery, better known as Uncle Phil from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, also starred as the villainous Shredder in the classic kids cartoon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Mind boggling, I know. TMNT ran from 1987 to 1994, while Fresh Prince aired from 1990 to 1996. So for four solid years, Avery was yelling at his son Carlton and chasing Will equally as much as he was yelling at his partner in crime Krang and chasing those miserable turtles.
I don't know about the rest of civilization, but this is a massive revelation for me. TV-sitcom uncle by day, crazed super villain by night? Sounds like a hero to me. Besides that whole villain part.
What's so amazing is how much sense this makes to me. How did I not catch this before? While watching the below interview, I couldn't help picturing Avery as the Shredder himself. It just fits, and I'm so glad to finally be a part of the select few who are aware of this uncanny connection.
