ACROSS OUR CLASSROOMS

AKRON-Jarrod Flinn of Salem graduated on Dec. 11 during fall commencement at the University of Akron.

He received a bachelor's of science degree in biology. His future plans include attending physician's assisting school.

URBANA-Eric Warrick of Minerva graduated with a bachelor's of science degree in accounting from Urbana University during the 116th commencement ceremony held on Dec. 11 in the Warren G. Grimes Center.

BOWLING GREEN-Kristen Llewellyn of Columbiana was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Bowling Green State University. She is a junior majoring in two dimensional art.

Llewellyn also received the Art Talent Award and BG Brown Scholarship for the fall and spring semesters.

She is the daughter of Kathy Reash of Columbiana and Ken Llewellyn of Youngstown.

KENT - Cassandra Creer, a 2008 Lisbon David Anderson High School graduate and a junior at Kent State University, has been selected for the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values Conference.

The conference will be held Feb. 10-13 in St.?Louis.

Creer, a hospitality and management major, served as social chair and is the current director of public relations for Delta Gamma Sorority which chosen as Sorority of the Year awarded from Kent Greek Life for excelling in qualified "pillars of excellence" designated by Greek Life such as scholarship, philanthropy and student involvement. Delta Gamma had the highest GPA for all sororities during past two semesters.

Creer serves as Panhellenic Council's Assistant Vice President of Recruitment and Retention for 2010-2011 and Vice President of Recruitment and Retention for 2011-2012.

She is also a Flashguide for The Destination Kent State Advising and Registration, is a member of the student organization PCMA and is a member of the Undergraduate Student Government Street Team. She was selected for an internship for Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. and is currently serving as a Study Abroad Programs Marketing Intern with the Office of International Affairs.

She is the daughter of J.D. Creer of Leetonia.

Teniell Trolian is the Greek advisor at Kent State.

KENT - Kaitlin Steeb earned the honor of being named to the president's list for her academic achievement during the 2010 fall semester at Kent State University.

To qualify for this prestigious award, students must complete at least 15 semester hours with a grade point average of 4.0.

A Columbiana High School graduate, Steeb is majoring in integrated language arts. She is the daughter of Ray and Bonnie Steeb of Columbiana.

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. Nearly 470 Westminster College students earned dean's list recognition for the 2010 fall semester. Area residents on the dean's list, which recognizes students who attain a grade point average of at least 3.6 out of a possible 4.0, include:

-East Palestine: Kellie Hill, a freshman mathematics major, the daughter of Kenneth and Mary Hill, and a graduate of East Palestine High School; Sara Lewis, a senior elementary education major, the daughter of Gary and Karen Lewis and a graduate of East Palestine High School; Juliette Powers, a junior biology major, the daughter of Mark and Cynthia Powers and a graduate of East Palestine High School;Brianne Todd, a junior elementary education major, the daughter of Brett Todd and a graduate of East Palestine High School.

-Leetonia: Coleen York, a senior public relations major, the daughter of Stanley and Leesa York and a graduate of Crestview High School.

-New Waterford: Emily Landis, a senior chemistry major, the daughter of Carl and Janine Landis and a graduate of Crestview High School.

-Salem: Katelyn Kurilla, a freshman biology major, the daughter of Thomas and Marilyn Kurilla and a graduate of Niles McKinley High School; Allison Ward, a sophomore sociology major, the daughter of Steven and Marilyn Ward and a graduate of Salem High School.

WACO, Texas-Baylor University conferred degrees on more than 800 graduates during fall commencement exercises at 10 a.m. Dec. 18 in the Ferrell Center on the Baylor campus. Among the graduates was Allison Ann Orosz of Salem who received a bachelor's of business administration in finance.

Baylor's nationally recognized academic divisions offer 151 baccalaureate degrees, 76 master's degrees, a juris doctor, 29 doctoral degree programs and two education specialist degrees through 11 academic units. Chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas, Baylor is a private Baptist university classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a research university with "high research activity."

COLUMBUS-On Jan. 10, at the Ohio Theater in Columbus, Brenna Price, a junior at Salem High School, had the honor and privilege of performing with the All-Ohio State Fair Band for the historic swearing-in of the 69th governor of the state of Ohio, John Kasich.

The All-Ohio State Fair Band has been in existence since 1925. It consists of about 200 high school musicians from across the state. Primarily, the band performs for two weeks per year, during the annual state fair in Columbus. Only 35 of the band's members performed at Monday's inauguration because it was held indoors and space is limited.

The students didn't have much time to prepare. The band met on the Ohio State Fairgrounds in Columbus on Monday for about a one-hour practice before being bused to the Ohio Theater for the inauguration. They performed such familiar tunes as "Beautiful Ohio," "Buckeye Battle Cry," "Stars and Stripes Forever" and "Hang On Sloopy" at the new governor's request.

LISBON-The Beaver Local School District will continue with open enrollment for the 2011-12 school year.

Any current open enrollment students must submit the re-application form that was mailed by Feb. 7, 2011. Failure to do so may result in the student not being re-accepted for the 2011-12 school year. Applications for new open enrollment students may be picked up from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 22-25 at the Beaver Local Board of Education, 13093 state Route 7. No applications for new open enrollment will be mailed.

WILMINGTON-The Shelby Kennedy Foundation has announced the beginning of 2011 Bible Bee season. Host registration for the third annual National Bible Bee opens on Feb. 1, and will remain open until March 31. Contestant registration runs from April 1 through May 31 Official contest materials will be released on June 1. Every contestant will receive a Bible, scripture memory cards, inductive Bible study curriculum, a T-shirt and more as part of registration. The Shelby Kennedy Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging the spiritual growth of the entire family through Bible study, scripture memorization and prayer, launched the National Bible Bee in 2009. The competition challenges youth from ages 7 to 18 years in Bible knowledge and memorization, first at local contests held around the country at the end of August, and then at a national competition held in November for the top 300 contestants from across the nation. The winners of the national Bible bee competition are awarded $260,000 in cash prizes and other awards. For information, visit www.BibleBee.org .

STRUTHERS-Applications are being accepted for the Thomas J. Seefred Trust Scholarship.

Fifteen years ago, Thomas J. Seefred of Struthers created the Thomas J. Seefred Trust It is a perpetual fund that will award scholarships up to S3,000 each to college students between 18 to 25 years of age who are suffering from juvenile diabetes. The college student must be successfully completing a standard curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree at an accredited junior college, college, or university. Current high school students are not eligible. This scholarship is open to Ohio residents with preference given to qualified applicants from Trumbull, Mahoning, and Columbiana counties. All scholarships will be awarded by the trust and will be based on academic promise, personal statement, recommendations, and financial need.
