Sports briefs: Fresno State adds six softball recruits

Seventh-ranked Azusa Pacific used a scorching second-half run to upend Fresno Pacific 77-69 Tuesday in men's basketball at the Special Events Center.

The first-place Cougars (19-2) improved to 10-1 in the Golden State Athletic Conference with their 14th straight victory. Fresno Pacific (12-8) fell to 5-6.

Jerante Morgan had 26 points for the Sunbirds, who led 27-23 at the half before the Cougars came out and scored 22 of the next 26 points.

Lacey Gibbons had 23 points and Kayla Clement 13 as the Fresno City College women's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of its tournament with a 92-57 victory Thursday over a Fresno Pacific alumni squad.

Kennis White scored 21 points and made four free throws down the stretch in overtime as West Hills got past Merced 73-67.

Fresno State announced the signing Friday of six softball players for the 2011-12 school year, among them outfielder/third baseman Brenna Moss of Bakersfield's North High.

Others are catcher/first baseman Taylor Green of Ruben S. Ayala High-Chino Hills, first baseman Kelly Megee of Martin Luther King-Riverside, catcher/third baseman Caitlin Neal of Foothill-Pleasanton, shortstop/third baseman Maria Sio of Laguna Hills and outfielder Michelle Solomon of Redlands.

Fresno State's season debut this year is at 1 p.m. Feb. 12 -- a doubleheader against Sacramento State at Bulldog Diamond.

The Fresno Grizzlies will honor former Fresno City College baseball coach Len Bourdet with the Al Radka Award during the 50th anniversary Hot Stove Gala on Thursday at the Fresno Convention Center.

Bourdet won 722 games and led the Rams to four state championships and 15 conference titles during a 31-year career at Fresno City, where he coached future major leaguers such as Tom Seaver, Dick Selma, Jim Maloney and Mark Gardner.

The Radka Award is named after the man who created and hosted the Fresno Hot Stove League Dinner from 1948-79. It honors an individual who gives back to the Fresno community through baseball.

Former San Francisco Giants standouts Will Clark and Matt Williams headline an event that also is scheduled to feature Giants bullpen coach Gardner, Grizzlies manager Steve Decker, a visit from the Giants' World Series trophy, and the announcement of the Hot Stove Coach, Team and Female and Male player of the year awards.

Florida State's 27th-ranked men's tennis team downed Fresno State 4-1 in the first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's National Indoors Sweet 16 in Los Angeles.

The Bulldogs' lone point came from No. 1 singles player Rikus de Villiers, who defeated No. 37-ranked Clint Bowles 7-5, 6-3.

Fresno State lost the doubles point, but got a victory from 21st-ranked Remi Boutiller and de Villiers, who defeated Vahid Mirzadeh and Connor Smith 8-6.

The Bulldogs face Minnesota -- a 4-0 loser to UCLA -- in consolation play at 6 p.m. today.

Fresno Pacific women's track and field standout Milika Tuivanuavou won four events at a Sunbirds-hosted all-comers meet.

Other multiple winners for Fresno Pacific included Andrew Clark (60 hurdles in 8.48; 400 in 49.9) and Mariah Mandelbaum (hammer throw in 132-5; weight throw in 43-13/4).

Defending NAIA women's tennis champion Fresno Pacific opened with an 8-1 nonconference win over Sonoma State in Rohnert Park.

Sara Celma downed Dana Carollo 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Cristina Valladeres to defeat Carollo and Haley Hickock 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.

Also earning wins for Fresno Pacific were Valladeres, Marie Boura, Yumiko Justin, Elizabeth McFeeters and Heidi Jackson in singles, and the team of Boura-Justin in doubles.

Kirill Sinitsyn downed Taylor Bianco 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, and teamed with Cledson Carvalho to knock off Bianco and Daniel Henke 8-1 at No. 1 doubles to lead the Fresno Pacific men's tennis team to an 8-1 season-opening victory over Sonoma State.

The Sunbirds swept the singles matches, also receiving wins from Xavier Smith, Jose Hilla, Nathan Martinet and Jaime Sanchez-Canamares.

Fresno Pacific won the doubles point thanks to a win by Martinet and Amarit Sanchez at No. 3.
