Iowa kicks running back Robinson off team

Iowa kicked running back Adam Robinson off the team Monday, just a week after he was arrested for marijuana possession.

Robinson was charged Dec. 27 in Des Moines. He was already suspended for Iowa's win over Missouri in the Insight Bowl for failing to comply with team policies.

Ridley to play in Cotton Bowl, source says • A source familiar with LSU running back Stevan Ridley's eligibility status says the Tigers' leading rusher has been cleared to play against Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl on Friday night.

Ridley's eligibility had been in doubt since coach Les Miles said Dec. 22 that the running back could miss the game because of an unspecified "one-time" academic violation.

UConn names interim coach • The University of Connecticut named assistant head coach for defense Hank Hughes as its interim head football coach while it seeks a replacement for Randy Edsall, who left after the Fiesta Bowl to take the head coaching job at Maryland.

Wannstedt won't coach Pitt in bowl game • Dave Wannstedt, ousted as Pitt's football coach last month, has decided not to coach the Panthers in the Compass Bowl against Kentucky on Saturday. Defensive coordinator Phil Bennett will serve as the interim coach for the game.

Former Miami (Ohio) coach Mike Haywood was selected Dec. 16 as Wannstedt's replacement, only to be fired Saturday after being jailed in South Bend, Ind., on a domestic violence charge. Pitt is now searching for Haywood's replacement.

Fred Meier dies • Fred Meier, the center on Nebraska's 1940 team that lost to Stanford in the Rose Bowl, died Wednesday. He was 90.
